Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Vinny Castilla had four hits and knocked in four runs and Greg Maddux pitched six effective innings, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 13-3 rout of the Chicago Cubs. Sparked by Castilla, who went 4-for-4 with a homer, the Braves extended their winning streak to a season-high seven games. Julio Franco added three hits and scored three runs and Henry Blanco belted a two-run homer for Atlanta, which owns baseball's best record at 59-31. "I think we have a great lineup," Castilla said. "We got good defense and our pitching is coming together. We have a chance to go all the way." Maddux (7-8) benefited from the offensive support, allowing three runs - two earned - and six hits. The veteran righthander struck out seven without a walk in improving to 10-3 against his former team. "You have to keep it down and take advantage of the grass here," said Maddux, a former Cub who improved to 5-1 against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. "I didn't get many groundouts but that's what you want to do. You can be more aggressive in the strike zone when the wind blows in." Cubs starter Shawn Estes (6-8) was ripped for six runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. The lefthander walked three and struck out five. With the game tied, 3-3, Estes worked himself into trouble in the sixth by issuing consecutive walks to Gary Sheffield and Chipper Jones. Andruw Jones struck out but Sheffield stole third and Franco laced an RBI single into right field. Castilla ended Estes' afternoon with a run-scoring single, giving the Braves a 5-3 advantage. Blanco greeted Dave Veres with a sacrifice fly. The Braves broke open the game in the eighth, scoring five times off hard-throwing righthander Kyle Farnsworth. Castilla and Chipper Jones had sacrifice flies in an inning that also featured RBI singles by Marcus Giles, Darren Bragg and an error by shortstop Alex Gonzalez that allowed another run to cross. Blanco provided the final margin in the ninth with his first homer of the season. After Estes departed, Veres, Farnsworth and Antonio Alfonseca combined to get ripped for seven runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. "Maddux was beatable today, Estes wasn't all that bad but they really took it to our bullpen," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. Atlanta banged out 13 hits and had each regular, including Maddux, reach base. "You knew it was day for some runs," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "Anybody who could put the ball in the air had a chance of putting it at." Rafael Furcal got the Braves off to a good start, leading off the contest with his 12th homer of the season. Castilla extended the lead in the second with an RBI double. But with the wind blowing out, Gonzalez got a run back for the Cubs in the second, lofting a 2-2 pitch from Maddux over the right field wall for his 12th homer. "The wind is blowing out so you know that you're gonna give up a couple," Maddux said. "You just try to stay out of the big inning and hope your team has one before them." The Cubs took a 3-2 lead in the third on run-scoring singles by Tom Goodwin and Sammy Sosa. "It looked like we had him on the ropes but lile the great pitcher he is, he managed to survive," Gonzalez said. "Even when he doesn't have his good stuff. Maddux is a brilliant pitcher and still knows how to win." But Castilla tied it to start the fifth, hammering a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for his 14th homer.
