Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Mark Redman tossed a five-hitter and Ivan Rodriguez doubled, homered and drove in four runs as the Florida Marlins posted an 8-1 triumph over the Atlanta Braves. Redman (6-3) logged his second complete game of the season, walking one and striking out two. He also collected his first career RBI on a groundout in the fourth inning. "He does a yeoman's job every time out," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. "He was working the corners, keeping the ball low and away. He kept it away from the middle of the plate. That's how he pitches when he's successful." Redman gave up a double to Rafael Furcal and a single to Marcus Giles to start the game. Gary Sheffield grounded into a double play that plated Furcal, but Redman retired 18 of the next 20 batters. Marcus Giles registered the only Braves hit in that span and Chipper Jones walked. "He mixed up his speeds pretty good," Giles said. "He kept us off-balance." "You have to make good pitches against that lineup," Redman said. "I gave a pump fist when we got the ground ball for the double play. We got out of there with only one run. You have to trust your teammates that they're going to get enough runs. I didn't want to stay out there and give up a bunch of hits. That inning could have been real ugly." The Marlins answered immediately as Juan Pierre and Luis Castillo opened the first with singles. Rodriguez then put Florida on the board with his 10th home run. Rodriguez gave the Marlins an 8-1 lead in the fifth with a double that scored Castillo. The Florida catcher has a season-high seven-game hitting streak and is batting .500 (14-for-28) with 12 RBI over that span. "I'm not doing anything differently," Rodriguez said. "I try to hit the ball hard. I felt I was doing that in the beginning of the year, but the ball was going right at people. Now, I'm finding the holes." Braves starter Greg Maddux (6-8) was tagged for seven runs and two home runs in four innings. Maddux entered the season with a 16-7 mark and a 2.14 ERA against the Marlins. This season he is 1-2 with an 11.25 ERA against Florida. "I didn't pitch good, I didn't locate good and they took advantage," Maddux said. "I'd rather lose 2-1 than 8-1. Who wouldn't? I didn't keep us in the game for the first five or six innings, which is what you're supposed to do. I didn't do it. I never gave us a chance to come back." Derrek Lee homered for the third time in four games and gave Florida a 6-1 lead in the third inning. Lee's two-run shot was his first home run at Pro Player Stadium since a shot April 12 against the Braves. Juan Pierre matched a career high with three stolen bases and registered his league-leading 38th stolen base for the Marlins, who moved to the .500 mark for the third time this week.
