Game StoryATLANTA (Ticker) -- Pat Hentgen already has an American League Cy Young Award to his credit. Now he has a save. Hentgen worked out of a jam in the sixth and pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings as the Baltimore Orioles snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating the Atlanta Braves, 9-3. Luis Matos homered and Jeff Conine drove in three runs for the Orioles, who salvaged the finale of a three-game series. While the final score was lopsided, the Orioles led just 4-3 when Hentgen replaced Jason Johnson (6-3) with runners on first and second and one out in the sixth. Hentgen retired Vinny Castilla on a fly ball and struck out Darren Bragg to end the threat. Hentgen, who won 20 games for the Toronto Blue Jays in 1996 and walked away with the Cy Young Award, did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out three. The save came in his 311th major league appearance, but he saw no special need to mark the occasion. "I don't really care about the save. I really wasn't thinking about it," Hentgen said. "No, I didn't get the ball. I don't think I'm on pace to get 300. I'm just glad we won the game." Hentgen, however, did mark the occasion with a bruise around his left eye. In the top of the ninth, he misplayed a ground ball that went off his glove and hit his eye. "I got leather on it. It was a bad fielding play," Hentgen said. "My eye wouldn't stop watering, that was the biggest problem." "He said, 'I'm fine, I'm fine, I just can't see,'" said Conine, who was playing third base. Hentgen threw out Castilla on the play and struck out Bragg for the final out. Johnson (6-3) won for the first time in four starts, allowing three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. "We didn't want to come in here and get swept," he said. "I was pretty happy with the way everything went. I felt strong. I'll take it." Two of the hits Johnson allowed were a two-run homer by Castilla in the second and a solo shot by Chipper Jones in the sixth. Atlanta's Shane Reynolds (5-2) allowed four runs - three earned - and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings and losst for the first time in five decisions. "You can't put the blame on anybody but myself," he said. "In that inning, I got out over the plate, and I can't pitch like that." Reynolds lost for the first time sine April 25, and the Braves were defeated for just the third time in his 13 starts. "Shane was throwing really good until the fifth inning," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "He's been a huge plus for us." Reynolds held the Orioles at bay until the fifth, when Baltimore scored four times. Johnson started the outburst with a single to center field before Brian Roberts walked. Matos followed with an RBI hit to left field and David Segui added a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. Conine delivered an RBI double that chased Reynolds. Ray King appeared to be out of the inning when he got Jay Gibbons on a fly ball and B.J. Surhoff hit a foul pop behind the plate. But catcher Javy Lopez dropped it and Surhoff pounced on the extra opportunity by delivering an RBI single to make it 4-2. Chipper Jones homered in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3. After Hentgen worked out of the jam in the sixth, the Orioles quickly added three runs in the seventh. Trey Hodges allowed a leadoff homer to Matos and was gone after yielding a one-out double to Conine. Jung Bong relieved and later allowed an RBI single to Surhoff and an RBI double to Deivi Cruz. Conine added a two-run triple in the ninth. Castilla hit a two-run homer in the second to score Lopez, who had singled. Baltimore's Melvin Mora, the American League's leading hitter, missed his second straight game after being hit on the wrist by a pitch from Greg Maddux on Friday.
