Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- After Keith Foulke squandered a ninth-inning lead, the Oakland Athletics bounced back in time to pad the best home record in the American League. Jermaine Dye homered off rookie Jung Bong in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Athletics a 4-3 triumph over the Atlanta Braves in a game started by two of the best righthanders in baseball. Two outs away from his 16th save of the season, Foulke served up a solo home run to Robert Fick that tied the game, 3-3. It was the third blown save of the season for Foulke, who struck out three in two innings. But with one out in the 12th, Dye launched a 1-1 offering from Bong (5-1) over the wall in center field to improve the Athletics' home mark to an AL-best 20-8. "I thought it was just going to be a line drive, but you never know with that center fielder out there in Andruw Jones," Dye said. "He's a good player and it got over the wall for me. ... It feels good to get a hit against a former team and a big one in that way." "First pitch was a fastball. And then the second pitch, I threw a changeup which was good and I had a lot of confidence to throw a second-pitch changeup," Bong said. "I saw a good drop and then the third pitch, I wanted to throw it again because he was a tall guy and my thing (was to get) a ground ball with a changeup. ... That's baseball and sometimes it happens." The homer was the first extra-base hit since April 10 for Dye, a former Brave who missed nearly the entire month of May following knee surgery. Chad Bradford (5-3) got the win, retiring all six batters he faced. But Foulke cost Tim Hudson his ninth straight home win after the Oakland starter held the Braves to two runs and six hits in eight innings. "Obviously, when I blow saves, it bothers me a lot and when Huddy goes out and pitches eight strong innings and I can't secure it," Foulke said. "It's not the first time. Maybe there's some bad karma when we both pitch in the same game." Four-time Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux was effective for Atlanta, allowing three runs and seven hits in seven innings. The righthander, who has not lost since May 14, walked one and struck out two. After the game, the two starters traded compliments. "It was neat," Hudson said of pitching against a player he called his idol. "Growing up watching the Braves, it was my team growing up, and I'm still a huge fan of those guys and I'm still a huge Maddux fan. So there are not many people who get to go out there and play a big league game against a guy you grew up watching and idolizing as a kid." "There's no question he's a very good young pitcher," Maddux said. "I kinda wish it was in our park so we would have got a chance to hit off each other. You like to face the guys that have good stuff and just to kinda see when you get to hit, you know what our hitters are going through." Marcus Giles went 3-for-5 for the Braves, who had their five-game winning streak snapped. Owning an 8-1 record in his previous 17 interleague starts, Hudson ran into trouble right from the start. With one out, Giles doubled to left-center field. After Hudson retired Gary Sheffield, he walked Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones to load the bases before getting Fick on a comebacker to end the threat. Oakland, which had lost four of its previous six, got on the board in the second on Eric Chavez's two-out solo homer. It extended its lead to 3-0 on Scott Hatteberg's RBI double in the third and Dye's run-scoring single in the fourth. Atlanta cut the deficit to 3-2 with two runs in the sixth. Rafael Furcal bunted for a single to start the inning and Giles ripped a ground-rule double to right field. Sheffield grounded out to plate Furcal and Chipper Jones followed with an RBI single to right. Macha elected to pull Hudson after a 95-pitch effort and called upon his closer in the ninth. But after striking out Andruw Jones, Foulke delivered a 1-2 pitch that Fick deposited just inside the right field foul pole to tie the game and extend his hitting streak to seven games. "It's about time I did something during the game," Fick said. "I left a lot of runners on and it was pretty much luck. I'm not going to lie, so it was all right, but we lost the game, so it really didn't matter." "It takes a lot to get on top of a neck-high fastball and to keep it fair down the line," Foulke said. "You don't see that too often. It was nowhwere near a strike." Both bullpens combined to retire the next 21 batters before Dye clouted the second walk-off homer of his career. The first came against the Athletics in 1999, when Dye was with Kansas City.
