Game Story
FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Braves' prolific
offense overshadowed a matchup between former teammates Greg
Maddux and Tom Glavine.
Backed by four solo homers, Maddux outdueled Glavine as the
Braves posted a 5-2 victory over the New York Mets.
While the matchup between the two likely future Hall of Famers
took center stage, the Braves' offense stole the spotlight at
the expense of Glavine.
Gary Sheffield, Julio Franco, Mark DeRosa and Chipper Jones all
homered off Glavine, who spent his first 16 seasons with Atlanta
before signing a multi-year contract with New York in December.
Atlanta has hit 55 homers in May, tying the National League
record for homers in a month. St. Louis accomplished the feat
in April 2000 and the New York Giants did it in July 1947.
"That's a lot of homers for one-third of a season," Jones said.
"Everybody is between seven and 14 and we keep the same
approach."
"I never saw the ball carry so good at Shea as it did tonight,"
Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "It looked like we were using
aluminum bats and Titlist golf balls."
The homers helped make a winner of Maddux (4-5), who held the
Mets to two runs and seven hits in five innings. The four-time
Cy Young Award winner walked one and struck out two en route to
his first win in six starts.
Maddux downplayed facing Glavine.
"I wasn't facing him," Maddux said. "I was facing the Mets. The
only time I was facing him was when I had the bat in my hand.
He's got good stuff. It was fun hitting off him. He was trying
to do the same job I was trying to do."
Glavine had a similar view as Maddux.
"Everybody makes a big deal about the pitching matchup but we're
not facing each other," Glavine said.
Darren Holmes, Ray King and Roberto Hernandez combined for 2 2/3
hitless innings in relief for Atlanta. John Smoltz struck out
the final four batters for his 20th save.
Glavine (5-5) lost to his former team for the second time in
less than a week. The former Cy Young Award winner gave up five
runs and nine hits in seven innings, walking one and striking
out one.
Glavine also allowed four homers in a game for the first time in
his career.
"It was a combination of them guessing right and bad luck,"
Glavine said. "You don't like giving up home runs but we still
had a chance. I'm not saying those pitches were where I wanted
them but I was surprised some of them went out of the park."
"It was probably a fluke," Jones said. "The balls were carrying
out and some got caught in the draft. He was better than he was
in Atlanta last week. Our guys took the same great approach.
When we got pitches we could handle, we didn't miss."
Sheffield touched Glavine for the first homer, hitting a 3-1
pitch over the left field wall with two outs in the top of the
first. It was his 14th homer.
Maddux struggled in the bottom of the inning as five of the
first six Mets singled. Jeromy Burnitz and Ty Wigginton had
run-scoring base hits in the frame, giving the Mets a 2-1 lead.
But Maddux settled down thereafter, allowing a leadoff single to
Vance Wilson in the second and a double by Wigginton to begin
the fourth.
Maddux worked around those hits and departed after throwing 53
of 83 pitches for strikes as he improved to 30-16 lifetime
against the Mets.
"It was 83 (pitches), but 75 were like there were two outs in
the ninth inning," Maddux said. "I could never cruise. Every
pitch had to be a good pitch. To do that, you tire quickly."
"He was right at about 90 pitches," Cox said. "That was a
complete game for him in the past. Look at pitch counts, (Mets
pitcher Al) Leiter had 136 after six, Maddux had 90 after six.
His pitches were right around the black. That was a normal
eight or nine innings for him. The name of the game is winning,
not how long you go."
Whereas Maddux was able to keep the ball in the park, Glavine
had no suck luck. Franco hit his first homer of the season
with one out in the second, tying the game at 2-2.
With two outs in the third, DeRosa deposited a 2-1 pitch over
the right field wall to give the Braves the lead for good.
Atlanta made a bid to increase the lead in the inning.
Following DeRosa's homer, Sheffield walked and Jones singled.
Andruw Jones laced a single into right field but Roger Cedeno
threw out Sheffield at the plate.
The Mets made a bid to tie the game in the fourth. After
Wigginton's double to start the inning, he reached third with
one out. But Glavine grounded to third baseman Vinny Castilla,
who gunned down Wigginton at the plate to preserve the lead.
Chipper Jones hit his ninth homer with one out in the sixth,
extending the Braves' lead to 4-2. Pinch hitter Marcus Giles
capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Mets reliever John Franco, who missed all of last season after
undergoing "Tommy John" surgery on his left elbow, made his
return to the mound. The 42-year-old received a standing
ovation and gave up two hits in a scoreless eighth.
"It was a great reception," Franco said. "All the hard work paid
off. I was enjoying the moment. I took one or two deep breaths
and had to get comfortable. It's very gratifying. A lot of
so-called experts said I should have hung it up. They don't
know me."
