Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The team that eliminated the Atlanta Braves from the playoffs last season cooled them off Friday. Benito Santiago and Jose Cruz Jr. each homered and drove in four runs to lead the San Francisco Giants to their sixth straight win, a 9-2 triumph over the Braves. The Giants beat the Braves, three games to two, in the National League Division Series last October en route to advancing to the World Series. "We've got a pretty good lineup from top to bottom," Santiago said. "We know we're gonna hit and this is a good way to start this series." The Braves entered Friday's game with 19 wins in their last 22 games, and starter Greg Maddux had won his last three decisions after an 0-3 start. But the Giants scored two runs off Maddux (3-4) in the sixth inning to snap a 1-1 tie. Rich Aurilia led off with a single and advanced to third on a single by Barry Bonds, who promptly stole second. Cruz followed with a sacrifice fly to right center as Bonds crossed to third and Santiago capped it with a sacrifice fly to center. "Good enough to lose, I guess," Maddux said. "I got the ball up to Aurilia and Bonds that inning (the sixth). It wasn't so much the sacrifice flies. It was the hits before the sacrifice flies." Marcus Giles led off the sixth with a homer off rookie Jesse Foppert (2-2) to pull the Braves within 3-2. Foppert pitched six innings and allowed two runs - solo homers by Chipper Jones and Giles - to earn the win. "We believe that we have a very special young man there," Giants manager Felipe Alou said of Foppert. "He's our fifth starter, but we feel when he's on the mound that we can win the game." "It's hard not to worry when Greg Maddux is on the other side, but you have to pitch your game," Foppert said. "I knew I had to throw a good game to beat him." Jim Brower worked the final three innings and yielded just one hit for his second save. Santiago hit a three-run homer off reliever Jung Bong in the eighth and Cruz blasted a three-run shot off Joey Dawley in the ninth. The crowd of 32,040 was the second largest of the season at Turner Field. The biggest was on Opening Day when 40,244 watched the Braves lose to Montreal, 10-2. Santiago singled, moved to second on a walk to J.T. Snow and scored on a two-out single by former Brave Marquis Grissom in the second inning. But Jones hit his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. Maddux pitched seven innings and allowed three runs and five hits before Bong, who had not given up a run in his last 15 1/3 innings, took over in the eighth. But Bong got into immediate trouble, walking Aurilia and giving up a single to Bonds. After Cruz lined out to center fielder Andruw Jones, the runners advanced on a wild pitch and Santiago followed with his fifth home run of the season. "He had been throwing the ball really well, but he got one pitch in the wrong spot to Santiago and he put it over the left field fence," said Braves manager Bobby Cox. Cruz hit his eighth home run of the season in the ninth after Brower singled and Aurilia walked.
