Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The biggest hit for the Atlanta Braves on Sunday was a collision between Mark Grace and Junior Spivey of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rafael Furcal drove in the go-ahead run with a fluke sacrifice fly in the 11th inning as the Braves rallied for a 7-4 victory over the Diamondbacks. Chris Capuano (0-1), the fifth Arizona pitcher, walked Darren Bragg and Vinny Castilla in the 11th before Henry Blanco sacrificed. Furcal blooped a short pop fly in back of first base, where Grace caught the ball before colliding with second baseman Spivey and falling to the ground. An alert Bragg raced home with the go-ahead run and Castilla also scored when Grace made a wild throw to the plate. "I will take full responsibility. The ball just took off on me," Grace said. Believe me I don't have that strong of an arm. The collision is not an excuse. I have to catch that ball and come up and put it on the button and I didn't." "It might be a record for the shortest sac fly," Bragg added. "The bottom line with us is that we play hard the whole game." Marcus Giles capped the inning with an RBI single off Capuano, who was called up from the minor leagues before the game and took the loss in his major league debut. "I knew that (pop fly) was trouble," Capuano said. "His momentum was carrying him a way from where he has to throw the ball. I shouldn't have let it get by me. I was expecting it was my game to win or lose at that point." Trey Hodges (1-0), the fifth of six Atlanta pitchers, worked a scoreless 10th for the win. John Smoltz allowed a hit in the 11th and earned his 12th save. Five Atlanta relievers - Ray King, Roberto Hernandez, Kevin Gryboski, Hodges and Smoltz - combined on five scoreless innings. "It is hard to pitch that many innings and hold a team down," Smoltz said. The Braves tied the game in the sixth on a two-run homer by Andruw Jones and an RBI double by Henry Blanco. Atlanta won for the seventh time in eight games and completed a six-game road trip at 5-1. "That game had a little bit of everything, clutch pitching, big hitting and great baserunning by Bragg," said Braves manager Bobby Cox, who was ejected by plate umpire Tony Randazzo in the first inning for arguing balls and strikes. "It was a tough, struggling ball game for both sides." Both starters - Greg Maddux for Atlanta and Elmer Dessens of Arizona - allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings. Spivey and Luis Gonzalez homered in the third off Maddux, the first time all season Arizona has hit back-to-back homers. The Diamondbacks jumped on Maddux for two runs in the first with the help of an error by shortstop Furcal. Spivey doubled and Gonzalez walked with one out before Furcal booted a ground ball by Danny Bautista, allowing the first run to score. Grace followed with a sacrifice fly. Spivey and Luis Gonzalez hit back-to-back homers to increase Arizona's lead to 4-1. The last time the Diamondbacks hit back-to-back homers was September 28, when Matt Williams and Felix Jose connected against Colorado. Atlanta answered with some power of its own to tie the game in the sixth. Chipper Jones doubled to lead off the inning before Andruw Jones went the opposite way off Dessens for his eighth homer. Doubles by Robert Fick and Henry Blanco later in the inning tied the game at 4-4. The Braves scored their first run in the second on an RBI single by Blanco. The Diamondbacks threatened in the eighth when Steve Finley tripled off the wall in center field with one out. But Hernandez retired Chad Moeller on a pop up and Tony Womack on a groundout to end the inning. "We had a lot of opportunities. We had a big one in the eighth," Grace said. "We couldn't come up with a big hit." It was the 100th career triple for Finley, tops among active major leaguers. Spivey had a pair of hits off Maddux and is 7-for-10 against the four-time Cy Young Award winer in his career.
