Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Braves took what the Philadelphia Phillies gave them. Ricky Ledee misplayed a fly ball by Vinny Castilla into a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Braves rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Phillies. Phillies starter Randy Wolf cruised into the sixth with a 4-1 lead before being let down by his defense. Marcus Giles opened the sixth for the Braves by hitting a routine grounder that eluded third baseman for Tyler Houston for an error. Gary Sheffield singled to extend his hitting streak to 15 games and Chipper Jones drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Wolf (2-1) got Andruw Jones to pop out but Julio Franco came through with a two-run single into right field to bring the Braves within 4-3. Carlos Silva relieved and Castilla greeted him with a line drive into center field. Ledee first broke in, then turned the wrong way and the ball sailed over his head, allowing the Braves to take a 5-4 lead. "It was a catchable ball, it should have been caught," Ledee said. "I froze. I didn't know what to do. I realized it was too close to me. I just missed it." "I was looking for a ball that I could hit and drive hard," Castilla said. "I saw a slider and I hit it pretty good. As he went back, I felt like he was going to have a hard time catching it. It was over his head." Kevin Gryboski (1-1) retired the only batter he faced in relief of Greg Maddux to get the win. Maddux went 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs - three earned - and eight hits. Ray King and Roberto Hernandez each worked a scoreless inning and John Smoltz struck out two in a perfect ninth for his sixth save. The Braves' four relievers combined for 3 1/3 hitless innings. After pounding Maddux for 10 runs and 12 hits over 5 2/3 innings earlier this month, the Phillies had the four-time Cy Young Award winner in trouble in the first in this one. Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a double into the right-center field gap and David Bell grounded an RBI single up the middle. Bobby Abreu reached on an error by shortstop Rafael Furcal before Jim Thome bounced into a forceout, leaving runners on the corners. Mike Lieberthal lofted a sacrifice fly to deep center field, giving the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Maddux pitched his way out out of trouble in each of the next three innings as the Phillies stranded a runner at third base in each frame. "There was a guy on in every inning, it seemed like," Maddux said. "I was in a lot of jams. I made a pitch. They hit it at somebody until the sixth." Henry Blanco got a run back in the second for the Braves with an RBI double that scored Castilla, who drew a two-out walk. Wolf cruised through the next three innings before his defense did him in. Wolf departed after 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs - four earned - and five hits. The lefthander walked three and struck out three. "Things kind of snowballed," Wolf said. "I don't think I lost concentration. Things just got away from me." "He pitched good. He lost concentration after Tyler made the error," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "You can't count errors as letting the game get away. We only made two mistakes." Maddux also settled down but the Phillies knocked him out in the sixth. Lieberthal and Houston singled with one out and Pat Burrell drew a walk to load the bases. Ledee followed with a broken-bat two-run single into right field, making it 4-1. After a sacrifice by Wolf, Gryboski relieved and issued an intentional walk to Rollins before getting Bell to ground weakly to second base.
