Game StoryATLANTA (Ticker) -- Even without Vladimir Guerrero, the Montreal Expos handed Greg Maddux his first Opening Day defeat. Orlando Cabrera highlighted a four-run first inning with a two-run homer against Maddux and the Expos rolled to a 10-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves before a crowd of 40,258 at Turner Field. The four-time Cy Young Award winner was 6-0 with a 1.66 ERA in seven Opening Day starts. Facing an Expos lineup Monday which was missing Guerrero, Maddux (0-1) gave up four runs and four hits in the first inning alone. "I didn't pitch good in that first inning, obviously," Maddux said. "The ball was up. I need to get the ball down next time and do better out of the gate. You put your team in such a hole in the first inning like I did, you just try to hang around for as long as you can." Endy Chavez pulled Maddux's third pitch of the game into the right field corner. Outfielder Gary Sheffield stumbled awkwardly as he appeared to make the catch, but the ball dropped out of his glove. Chavez cruised into third for a triple and scored on Jose Vidro's sacrifice fly. Rookie Ron Calloway, who played in right field for the suspended Guerrero, doubled to right for his first major league hit and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. After Wil Cordero struck out, Brad Wilkerson singled to center to score Calloway and Cabrera belted the first pitch he saw over the 380-foot sign in left. "Maddux is always trying to get ahead and throw that first strike and I was looking for it," Cabrera said. "It was a slider up and in. You always are going to have one opportunity to hit the ball off of him. You have to be aggressive every time. Compared to him three years ago, he's missing some spots. He's leaving the ball high and in." Signed to a one-year, $14.75 million contract last month, Maddux allowed just one unearned run and five hits over the next six innings. "Maddux could easily have had a shutout after that first inning," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "He just had some trouble with location in the first inning." Making his first Opening Day start, Tony Armas Jr. (1-0), who is making $2.1 million in 2003, gave up just one run and five hits in six innings to earn the win. He had lost his last six decisions against the Braves, dating to June 29, 2001 "It was an honor," Armas said of the Opening Day assignment. "I'm here to pitch and perform and everything went well. I was still pitching as if the game was 0-0. Sometimes with a four-run lead, you think you have the game won but you have to pitch your game still." Armas struck out two, walked just one and threw 51 of his 83 pitches for strikes. "He (Armas) was in the zone. His slider was awesome," Cabrera said. "He used a lot of fastballs and they had a lot of movement." Jeff Liefer had four RBI for the Expos after coming into the game as a pinch hitter in the eighth. He delivered a two-run single in that inning and added a two-run double in the ninth. Even without Guerrero, who will finish serving his two-game suspension Wednesday for charging the mound in a spring training game, the Expos banged out 14 hits. After managing just two hits in the first five innings, the Braves scored their only run off Armas in the sixth. Rafael Furcal led off the inning with the first of his three hits, a triple that went off the glove of a leaping Calloway in right, and came home on Robert Fick's sacrifice fly. Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones had two-out singles later in the inning, but shortstop Cabrera made a leaping catch of a liner by Marcus Giles to end the inning. Giles later had an RBI single in the eighth. But the Expos turned two errors into an unearned run in the seventh. Pinch hitting for Armas, Henry Mateo singled to start the inning and advanced to second when left fielder Chipper Jones booted the ball. Chavez put down a perfect sacrifice bunt which third baseman Vinny Castilla fielded and threw wildly past first, allowing Mateo to score. Montreal broke open the game with three runs in the eighth off Ray King and Roberto Hernandez. King walked Wilkerson and Cabrera and Tatis singled off Hernandez to load the bases before Liefer delivered his two-run single, giving the Expos a 7-2 lead. Calloway drew a bases-loaded walk to cap the inning. Liefer, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the three-team trade involving pitchers Orlando Hernandez and Bartolo Colon, was credited with a gift two-run double in the ninth when Jones misjudged his liner to left. "It's a great feeling," said Liefer, who hit only .188 (9-for-48) in the spring. "You always want to get off to a great start and really everybody contributed today. "We know we're good and we have a lot of confidence." The Expos won their third straight season opener and snapped Atlanta's four-game winning streak on Opening Day. The Braves are just 16-22 in season openers since moving to Atlanta in 1966.
