Estudio 50013 Just Like Me/Understanding/He was a friend of mine/Shake- (1968) |
Now comes the chapter in the story that has collectors reaching for their cheque books, and all fans of UK 60's music gasping for breath. Tony and a slightly altered group left for Portugal. Ian Green's keyboards were dropped and Dennis Thompson had been instigated on bass, leaving Tony to be the singer out front. Why Portugal? Ian Buisel's brother Jimmy had got involved with a pretty Portuguese girl whose father ran a Radio Station. They all went out to spend a holiday in the family's home in Lisbon, and while they were there 'dad' offered them a radio session. They got some gear together and recorded 5 tracks which were duly aired on a suitable 'UK flavoured' pop programme. Four of these songs were then released in Portugal on the the Vibrations will continue to be The Tops! Radio Stations own Estudio label. The EP, in its unusual sleeve, has become one of the rarest 60's items — and one of the best. The songs, all cover versions, cut a path of semi-restrained fury through the Small Faces' 'Understanding, Sam Cook's 'Shake' and The Byrds' 'HeWas A Friend of Mine'. They also blend raga and garage on a simply brilliant rendition of Paul Revere & The Raiders' 'Just Like Me' — complete with a hoarse scream from Tony before each heart-stopping guitar solo. Breathtaking! The group disbanded on returning to the UK. |
