| AP Biology Scientific American Articles Purpose: To familiarize yourself with current and emergent trends in the field of Biology. To be able to see how the eleven themes of Biology are related to current publications. Directions: Students will be required to research, read and summarize a total of between 14-16 Scientific American articles between now and the fourth marking period. The articles must be at least 8 pages in length to be considered for the assignment (This does not include abstract, bibliography or pictures). The article must be printed out and attached to your summary. You must have at least one article for each theme of Biology. (Campbell p27) the cell, heritable information, emergent properties of biological systems, regulation, interaction with the environment, energy and life, unity and diversity, evolution, structure and function, scientific inquiry, science technology and society. Your summary must be handwritten neatly and follow all the correct rules of punctuation and grammar. Your summary must include the following information: 1. What theme(s) of Biology does your article relate to? 2. What is the main point of the article? (narrative, persuasive, informative, etc) 3. Give an accurate summary of what issues are being discussed and how this relates to the themes you have included. This should not only come from the first two pages of your article. 4. A separate paragraph about your opinion on the article. This can include any thought s you have as to how the article could have been improved upon. Your articles will be collected every two-three weeks. You can hand in articles early if you like. Articles may relate to several themes. You are not allowed to do the same articles as your lab partners. There is a wide array of articles on Ebsco do not be afraid to look for them. |
