| This website was originally constructed to present information related to the first-year SBA elections (thus, the picture to the right). Since those elections were held over two years ago I'm now using this site to post my old notes and publications; perhaps they can be of some use to everyone else. | ||||||||||||||||

VA, Spring 2001 Federal Emergency Management Agency, Office of General Counsel, Summer 2001 Some more info about me: I spent the first half of my life growing up in the small town of Woodstock, VA where I was related to most of the population in some way. My graduating class included only 140 people and since there wasn't much to do in Woodstock I had to find some way to entertain myself. As a child I spent most of my free time hunting, fishing, skiing, and flying. In fact, on my 16th birthday I made my first solo flight in my Cessna 172, before I could even drive a car by myself. A few years later I began attending Hampden-Sydney College. This is a small, private, all male school in south-central Virginia. Since there were only one thousand students at the school there were plenty of opportunities to become involved in the community and take a leadership position in clubs and organizations. After one year at the school I decided to join Theta Chi Fraternity (Nu Chapter) and found a wealth of opportunities to develop my leadership skills and become involved, both socially and academically, with my fellow students. After joining the fraternity I became more interested in politics and began to spend my summers in DC working for various political organizations. My first political internship was with Congressman Frank Wolf from the 10th district of Virginia. I truly enjoyed my work in his office and this experience led to more intenship opportunities both in DC and in Richmond. In fact, during the spring of 2001, I spent three days a week commuting from Hampden-Sydney to Del. Glenn Weatherholtz's office in Richmond, and the other two days were spent in Cong. Virgil Goode's office in Farmville, Virginia. Needless to say, that was a stressful semester. I left H-SC with a B.A. in Political Science in the winter of 2001 and immediately began taking classes at George Mason University's Fairfax campus. A few weeks after arriving at GMU I began to get involved in the Eta Chi Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity and by the end of my first semester at the school they had elected me to serve as Vice-President of the organization. While studying accounting at GMU I began to work at Homes, Lowry, Horn & Johnson, LTD of Vienna, Virginia. This was the first time I had worked through a tax season with any accounting firm and so I quickly learned that my "part-time" schedule actually involved working 40 hours a week - that just happend to be part-time compared to everyone else in the firm. The work was intense but I enjoyed it, and so when I left GMU in December of 2003 I immediately began working with Beers & Cutler, PLLC in their Tyson's Corner office. As a Staff I at B&C I spent my first two months working on the financial statement audits of several large law firms, and the remainder of tax season was spent doing the taxes of those firms and their partners. I expected tax season to be very busy and very stressful but it still took a while to adjust to the sixty and seventy hour work weeks. There is, however, a great sense of relief when you finish printing the 7000+ page long tax return for a very large I.P. law firm and go back to doing complex individual returns that only take about twenty hours each (note: never invest in oil and gas wells, accounting for them is a mess). In early June I left Beers & Cutler so that I could prepare for law school. I moved out of my apartment in Tyson's Corner and into a new place Arlington and once my review course for the CPA exam ended I took off and went to the beach to relax for a while. So, here I am now, three years into law school and more than ready to be done with it. I've already accepted an offer, and once the Bar exam is over I will start working in tax, trust, and estate planning with Owen & Truban, PLC in Winchester, Virginia. |
