GMO Opens Spring '08 with Laughers!!
BACK TO RECAPS
LA PLATA, Maryland (AP) The GMO Men's Softball team opened up the 2008 Spring regular season against newcomer Patuxent Plumbing.  This team is from Calvert County and is new to the Charles County league.  There were numerous reports surfacing on Wednesday night that this team had signed up late and the only slot left open was in the Wednesday night league, the night where the top teams the county has comes out to play.  But, whether he was being overly cautious or just not wanting to lose focus, Coach Craig Bikowski was not giving into the temptations of being comfortable coming into the games.  "You can never take a team lightly.  I think we learned that last month in the Early Bird Tournament", said Coach Craig.  However, GMO opened up game 1 very flat and could not seem to string together more than 2 or 3 hits at a time.

The biggest knock on GMO over the years has been their lack of offensive consistency.  That is what doomed them in the Early Bird and it seemed to be the theme of game 1 early on.  GMO had 4 batters come to the plate in the first inning of game 1, 1 walk, a pop out and two fly outs.  "Not the way you want to set the tone in the first inning of a double header in a brand new season", said Craig.  But fear not, the GMO offense just took a little while to warm up.  Oh, and the opposition took a little while to stink it up as well.  When GMO didn't earn a hit, Patuxent Plumbing found a way to make an error and give them a base.  What started out as a slow moving game, quickly turned into an onslaught, as GMO took game 1 17-0.  Lee Bowles led the way in game 1 going 2 for 2 with 2 walks and 1 forced pissed pants.  Craig followed closely going 3 for 4.  GMO's defense was pretty sharp, although they were never really threatened as Patuxent Plumbing failed to get a batter past 2nd base.

Game 2 was much worse than game 1 as Patuxent Plumbing showed everyone in attendance that playing defense is going to be a challenge for them all season long.  This time, GMO did not prolong the inevitable as they ended this one in 4 innings, 30-0.  Chris "my back hurts more than yours" Bikowski led the way going 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 triples.  Darrin "I love me some Me" Edelen went 3 for 3 with a triple.  On the night, Craig and JR led the team with 7 RBIs each and speedsters Scott and Craig led the team with 6 runs scored a piece.  It wasn't a night where one could gauge just how good this GMO team will be this season, but it did help the team get the memory of the early bird tourney out of their mind.  Next week, GMO faces long time rival Richardson Construction who rumors have it are much improved this season.  As a matter of fact, Richardson took two games from Alexanders Tree Service (Murphy Brothers) in the opening night, so this looks to be a much more difficult night for GMO than they faced in week 1.
