Matthews 'D' Story
written by Matthew's mom Cindy, from Michigan

I knew something was wrong.  Matthew had lost so much weight and was so moody.   I think I actually knew it was Diabetes, but readily denied it.  So when the doctor said he wanted to do a
urine test to check Matthew's sugar, I said Ok.  After leaving the Dr's office, it was forgotten.  We went home and went on with our regular lives.

When the doctor called us, I was concerned.  It was Saturday and, like the rest of us, Doctors usually like to take the day off.  Matthew's sugar was 1020.  I had no idea what that meant.  Then he told me what a normal blood sugar level is.  I Cried.

I calmly (not what I felt at the time though) went to my son and said we need to pack him an overnight bag.  He asked if we were going to Grandma's for the night.  I could see he was getting
excited at the prospect of it.

I explained to him that the doctor called and said that he is very sick right now and had to go to the hospital for a few days.  Now to an 11-year-old who just lost his grandpa, that he was very close to, the hospital was for people who are going to die.  My heart was breaking watching my son try to hold back his tears.

I explained all that I knew about Diabetes on the way to the hospital.  This was not much help because I did not know much.

Matthew amazed me.  At 11 years old he listened to the doctors and nurses very intently.  He took control of his own care and diet.  He still hated the disease, but was resigned to take care of it the best he could.

It's been one year and he is doing great.  He is healthy.  He has
gained weight and looks great.  Thank God to all we have met on this long road that have taught us that WE can be in control and
not the disease.  Matthew is living like a normal 12 year old and has the maturity about his disease of an adult...

He's my hero.
