Archibald McMahan and his life in Grove Creek SC, 1790 - 1806

To get to Grove Creek, head South out of Greenville, South Carolina on I-85  and take hwy 86 to the left (South) until it intersects  with Hwy 20.  This intersection is in Piedmont.  Turn right here and go approximately 2 miles .  McMahan road will turn back to the left.  After a few miles it will intersect the Greenville/Pelzer Road.  Across the road McMahan Mill Road goes to the right. (South East) and eventually dead ends into another road.

He left Orange County, N.C. after the was and  he was counted in the 1790 census in Greenville County.    He had two females in his household (Check the date the Census was actually taken.)

Henry Parris moved with Thomas Payne and Ann to Grove Creek.

Joshua Thompson looked at some of Archibald's old papers.  One was a lease Archibald took from Jacob Caphart for a piece of land where he lives which was within a mile of where McMahan lived but failed to find it.  This however was previous to his purchase of the land where he now lives, the deed of which from Blasingame and another from Ham, both dates in the year 1792, one in April and the other in August.

John Buckner Smith and Henry Parris both knew Archibald in North Carolina and moved with him or a year after him  to Grove Creek.  They were still around as Greenville County residents to testify after his death that he was married to Ann

In the Grove Creek community you will find Rehoboth Baptish Church, near  Road 541 off Hwy 20.  This was  Methodist in 1832, and the following McMahans are buried there:

Arch McMahan February 27, 1851 - June 27, 1931
Mary Shockley McMahan October 16, 1860 - May 2, 1932
