Augustus Edward Deaton and Katie Burklein

Gus and Katie lived on what is now Hwy 11, north of West Union on the left side of the road.  The house his children grew up in is still standing in 1999.  The family moved from there to a farm out Church Street in Walhalla , North of town.  From there they moved to a farm directly across Hwy 28 from the Engles shopping center, and remained there until his daugher, Carrie married Louis Kelly.  He built his last house which is still standing in West Union.

His children attended school at the West Union School house, still standing at the intersection on the Old Walhalla Highway and Hwy 11.  The family used to shop at what was then a general store at the same intersection.

Gus Deaton worked for the state of South Carolina building roads.  Later in life he worked as a logger and in the 1950's was working at the lumber mill in West Union.

Katie grew up on a farm across from Stumphouse Mountain.  After she was married, She lived in West Union and at one point she walked to Walhalla and bought a table or mantle clock.
