5/28 - The Jays trounced the Tigers today, 12-7. Carlos Delgado led the way with two home runs (17) and 5 RBI. Chris Woodward, play second base in the field, had a nice day at the plate, going 2-4 with 3 RBI. Rookie Clayton Andrews (W, 1-1) picked up his first career major league victory, pitching in relief of starter Chris Carpenter.
5/23 - The Jays KO'd Pedro Martinez (L, 7-2) tonight, en route to a close 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox. Shannon Stewart got the scoring underway in the first inning, when he reached home on a Martinez wild pitch. Carlos Delgado added a sacrifice fly in the third, and Tony Batista followed with his 12th homer of the season in the fourth to give the Jays the lead they needed. Chris Carpenter (W, 4-5) picked up the win, going 5-2/3 innings and allowing 2 runs. Billy Koch (S, 10) picked up the save but had a little scare as Trot Nixon grounded out to him with runners on first and second.
5/20 - On his 37th birthday, David Wells (L, 7-2) allowed 6 runs to the Chicago White Sox, taking the loss in a 6-2 decision. Wells lasted only 3-1/3 innings, and was outdueled by ChiSox starter James Baldwin (W, 7-0). Shannon Stewart and Carlos Delgado provided the offense with solo shots in the eighth and ninth innings. The Jays have dropped three straight games, and are now back to .500.
5/19 - Despite outhitting the White Sox 11-5 Friday night, the Jays managed to lose the game, 5-3. Kelvim Escobar (L, 4-5) took the loss, allowing all of Chicago's runs in the third inning. He did, however, go 7 innings and strike out 9. Driving in Jays runs were Carlos Delgado, Tony Batista, and Homer Bush. On a side note, struggling Roy Halladay was sent down to Syracuse a few days ago in favor of Peter Munro. So far this season, Halladay is 2-4 with an 11.97 ERA. By the way, don't forget to vote for your favorite Blue Jays in this year's All-Star Game balloting!
5/14 - David Wells (W, 7-1) scattered seven hits for his AL-leading third complete game, as the Jays topped the Devil Rays, 3-2 on Mother's Day. Wells gave up two early runs but then settled down in striking out five and walking none. Darrin Fletcher hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth to give the Jays their only lead of the game. Shannon Stewart was activated off the disabled list and went 2-5 starting in left field. The game was Jim Fregosi's 2,000th as a manager.
5/10 - Lance Painter (W, 1-0) got the win in his first Blue Jays start, as Toronto crushed Baltimore 7-2. Painter went 5 strong innings, allowing a mere run on a hit and a walk, while striking out 8. He got the start in place of the struggling Roy Halladay. Tony Batista led the offensive attack with his 10th homer, extending the Jays' club record home run hitting streak at SkyDome to 21 games. Alex Gonzalez added 3 hits, and Marty Cordova and Homer Bush both had 2 RBI.
5/9 - David Wells (W, 6-1) won his fifth straight start, going 8 innings and allowing 4 runs in the Jays' 6-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Billy Koch (S, 9) wrapped things up with the save. Raul Mondesi hit two homers (9), while Darrin Fletcher (7) and Carlos Delgado (12) also went deep, as the Jays set a club record by homering in 20 straight home games. The Jays are on pace to hit 211 homers at SkyDome this season, and that would crush the current major league record for home runs at home (149 at Coors Field in 1996).
5/8 - Darrin Fletcher hit a grand slam and Tony Batista added a two-run shot, as the Jays beat the O's at SkyDome, 6-5. The Jays have now homered in every one of their 19 home games, the longest streak in team history. The team's 62 total home runs this season is nearly 25% more than any other team in the AL. Kelvim Escobar (W, 3-4) picked up the win despite allowing 12 hits in 7 innings, while Billy Koch (S, 8) bounced back from the previous day's blown save to notch the save. On another note, Jose Cruz Jr has been named the AL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday. He belted five homers and had 12 hits, along with nine runs and nine RBI.
5/5 - Darrin Fletcher's walkoff single gave the Jays their 1,800th win in franchise history. Fletcher drove in the winning run in the ninth as the Jays topped the Indians in a wild one, 11-10. There were a total of six lead changes, and a combined 33 base hits. In an offense-filled matchup, both Raul Mondesi (6) and Carlos Delgado (10) hammered homers off the restaurant in center field, while Jose Cruz Jr (11), Alex Gonzalez (2), and Fletcher also added long balls. Billy Koch (W, 2-0) picked up the win by retiring the final batter.
5/4 - David Wells (W, 5-1) outpitched Chuck Finley (L, 3-1), as the Jays defeated the Cleveland Indians, 8-1, in a lefty pitching matchup. After the Tribe scored their lone run in the first, Toronto came back strong with a five-run second inning. Andy Thompson picked up his first major league hit on an RBI single with the bases loaded to start off the Jays scoring. Carlos Delgado added a home run in the fifth. As for Wells, he went eight innings, striking out six. On some roster notes now... Craig Grebeck is day-to-day, experiencing back spasms following a minor car accident. Meanwhile, Shannon Stewart is on the 15-day DL with a hamstring pull, and Thompson will fill in for him.
5/2 - Yesterday, the Jays started off May like it was still April. The team added to their AL leading home run total (43 going in), as they topped the Chicago White Sox, 5-3. Raul Mondesi, Jose Cruz Jr, and Alex Gonzalez all homered, but it was Brad Fullmer's two-run shot in the sixth that put the Jays ahead. Chris Carpenter (W, 3-3) won his third straight game, improving to 4-0 for his career at Comiskey Park.
