4/29 - The Jays' bats fell silent Friday, as they got shut out by the Yanks, 6-0. Former Jay David Cone (W, 1-2) bounced back from his poor outing against Toronto last Saturday, when he was rocked for eight runs in three innings. The Jays managed only five baserunners off Cone, and three hits in the game.
Update: Scoreless yesterday, the Jays rebounded today by winning 6-2 over the Yanks. A big three run sixth led by Tony Batista and Alex Gonzalez's back-to-back two-out RBI doubles put the Jays up 4-1, and they never looked back. Starter David Wells (W, 4-1) threw five good innings before leaving the game with tightness in his lower back. He ended up allowing five hits and one run. Paul Quantrill, John Frascatore, Pedro Borbon, and Billy Koch (S, 5) finished off. On a final note, Raul Mondesi got a hit to snap a career-worse 0-24 slump, but had to leave in the fifth with inflammation in his right ankle.

4/27 - After getting pounded 11-2 by Oakland on Tuesday, the Jays came back strong with a 4-2 win Wednesday. Chris Carpenter (W, 2-3) pitched 7-1/3 strong innings, shutting down the A's after allowing two first inning scores. Carlos Delgado hit a home run (8) to make the Jays' April total 43, a club record. Albert Castillo broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth with a sac fly, and Toronto never looked back. Today, the Jays are off, as they get ready to start a weekend set against the New York Yankees.

4/25 - Last night, the Jays topped the Athletics, 3-2. Backed by a strong 6-2/3 innings from David Wells (W, 3-1) and a clutch two-run double from Tony Batista, the Jays managed to win a game without hitting a home run. The team's streak of scoring six or more runs in 11 consecutive games was snapped, but Wells was glad that the game was well-pitched. "It's only April. There's no reason to panic or get distraught over the pitching staff," the Jays ace stated. He allowed one run and struck out eight. On another note, Carlos Delgado earned Co-AL Player of the Week honors with the White Sox's Chris Singleton. For the week ending Sunday, the Jays first basemen hit four homers, three doubles, and scored 11 times.

4/23 - After securing their second straight series win, the Jays were pounded for ten runs by the Yanks today, in losing 10-7. Frank Castillo started the game but was chased after two innings, allowing two homers and three runs. Clayton Andrews (L, 0-1) came in for relief, but looked like he needed some Tylenol of his own, allowing seven runs. Following two straight complete games from its starters, Toronto was probably bound to allow some runs this time out. Jose Cruz Jr (8), Carlos Delgado (7), Darrin Fletcher (3), and Marty Cordova (1) homered in the losing effort.

4/22 - The Jays topped the Yankees for the second straight game, winning 8-2. Jose Cruz Jr hit two home runs (7), the first of which hit the SkyDome Windows restaurant in straight-away center. Tony Batista added his eighth homer on the season, as the Jays scored at least six runs for their tenth consecutive game. That's the longest such streak in the Majors dating back to 1979, when the California Angels did it for 11-straight. Kelvim Escobar (W, 2-2) pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits while striking out four. The Jays now have a four-game winning streak.

Darrin Fletcher watches his grand slam fly off4/21 - In another high-scoring affair, the Jays nearly blew an 11-1 lead in edging the Anaheim Angels, 12-11. Up by ten runs, Toronto surrendered eight runs in the sixth, and then one more in each of the next two innings, before Billy Koch (S, 2) stopped the rally to preserve the Jays' first series win of 2000. Roy Halladay (W, 2-2) picked up the victory despite allowing seven runs. Catcher Darrin Fletcher hit a grand slam (2) and tied a career-best with five RBI to lead the way on offense. Carlos Delgado also added his fifth homer of the season, while Raul Mondesi and Brad Fullmer both contributed three hits.
Update: The Jays beat the Yanks today, 8-3, ending New York's eight-game winning streak. Chris Carpenter (W, 1-3) held the defending World Series champs to five hits, as he threw an impressive 88-pitch complete game. He allowed three runs and struck out three, walking none. The offense continued its tear, as Delgado, Mondesi, and Alex Gonzalez all had two RBI.

4/20 - David Wells (W, 2-1) struck out 10 for his second complete game of the season, helping the Jays top the Angels, 12-4. Wells was pushed by the recent death of one of his friends, and went the distance, allowing eight hits and four runs. Meanwhile, Tony Batista continues to perform, smacking his seventh homer of the season. Jose Cruz Jr added his fifth, and Brad Fullmer his fourth. The Jays will try to win this four-game set with Anaheim later today.

Alex Gonzalez avoids Adam Kennedy to complete the double play4/19 - Adam Kennedy collected 8 RBI yesterday, as the Angels embarassed the Jays, 16-10. The rookie second baseman Kennedy hit a grand slam, a bases-loaded triple, and two singles. The Jays' pitching woes continue, as starter Frank Castillo (L, 0-2) and relievers John Bale and John Frascatore all surrendered five runs. On a brighter note, Toronto got home runs from Craig Grebeck (2), Raul Mondesi (4), Carlos Delgado (4), and Jose Cruz Jr (4).

4/18 - Led by Kelvim Escobar (W, 1-2), the Jays bounced back and topped the Anaheim Angels, 7-1. After a weekend where the pitching staff allowed 47 runs to the Seattle Mariners, Escobar was ready to get everything back on track. The Jays starter threw 8 strong innings, allowing only one run and getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning. The offense did its part, as Brad Fullmer hit a grand slam, and Raul Mondesi added a solo shot, while Carlos Delgado went 3-3 at the plate.

4/13 - Yesterday, the Jays topped the Anaheim Angels, 6-2, to end a brief losing streak. Tony Batista hit his fifth homer of the season to seal the deal, and Raul Mondesi also helped out with a three-hit game. Frank Castillo pitched a solid 6-2/3 innings, allowing only two runs. Pedro Borbon (W, 1-0) picked up his first win as a Blue Jay, getting one out in the seventh. After a break today, the Jays will play host to the Seattle Mariners on Friday.

4/12 - Sorry for the lack of updates the past few days, but I will hopefully get back on track tomorrow. The Jays have been struggling right now, but things are headed the right way. Raul Mondesi hit his first home run in a Blue Jays uniform yesterday night against the Angels, and hopefully it's only a little taste of what's to come. After wrapping up the Anaheim series tonight, the Jays will be back in Toronto against the Mariners.

4/8 - David Wells (W, 1-0) pitched the first complete game shutout in the Majors this season, helping the Jays down the Texas Rangers, 4-0. Wells allowed nine hits and one walk while striking out five, needing only 89 pitches (66 of which were strikes) to help the team end its three-game skid. In the first inning, Carlos Delgado doubled in Raul Mondesi to provide all the Jays would need. Later, Delgado would add a sacrifice fly, and Craig Grebeck would homer (1) to cap off the scoring. Grebeck played extremely well in his first appearance of 2000, going 3-5 while scoring a run and driving in two others. Shannon Stewart and Mondesi both contributed two hits, as the Jays improved to 3-3.

4/7 - The Jays dropped their third straight game today, losing 11-5 to the Texas Rangers and falling to 2-3 on the season. Despite jumping out to a 4-0 lead aided by a homer from Tony Batista (4), starter Frank Castillo (L, 0-1) and the Jays were unable to hold on. Castillo was roughed up, allowing five runs in three innings of work. Relievers Lance Painter and John Frascatore weren't able to stop the bleeding, as they gave up a combined seven hits (four home runs) and six runs. On offense, Jose Cruz Jr hit a dinger, his second of 2000, and went 2-4 with two runs scored. However, Carlos Delgado continues to struggle, going hitless in four at-bats.

4/3 - Today's Opening Day, and BlueJayFan Net has a lot of new stuff lined up. First, new columnist Xiao Ma has put together his Season Preview with analysis of the Jays' pitching and hitting, along with individual player grades. Next, John M. Milner also has a new article out, detailing the career of Blue Jays hero Joe Carter. If that's not enough, check back later tonight for a complete wrap of today's game against the Kansas City Royals!
Update: The Jays have topped the Royals, 5-4, for an exciting Opening Day victory. Tony Batista played hero, hitting the game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and the bases empty. Batista, who had hit a dinger earlier in the game, connected on his second off reliever Jerry Spradlin (L, 0-1) to pull it out for Toronto. It was a relief, as Billy Koch (W, 1-0; BS, 1) gave up two runs in the top of the inning to give the Royals hope. Koch blew a good performance by David Wells, who went six innings while striking out five and allowing two runs on five hits. The Jays didn't wait a beat to get the scoring going, as Shannon Stewart ripped a home run in the team's first at-bat of the 2000 season (the first Opening Day leadoff homer in club history). Stewart would later hit his second longball off Royals starter Jeff Suppan. While Stewart (2-3, 2 HR, 2 RBI) and Batista (3-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI) were the big stars of this game, Alex Gonzalez also played well, hitting 2-3. New acquisition Brad Fullmer got credited with the only other Jays hit, and also scored a run. The big guns of Raul Mondesi and Carlos Delgado went a combined 0-8 with three strikeouts. Overall, though, it was an exciting game from the team in front of a crowd of 40,898 at the SkyDome. The win improved the club's all-time Opening Day record to 19-5, and hopefully, it will be a sign of things to come for the newly underway season.

4/1 - These past couple of days have been busy and painful ones for the Jays and their fans alike. Yesterday, Shawn Green made his first appearance back in Toronto since being traded to LA, and was greeted with a mix of cheers and boos. Raul Mondesi did not receive a great response from his former Dodger teammates, as he was plunked twice in the game, and had to leave for x-rays. Chris Carpenter was banged up also, getting hit in the right elbow on a line drive. X-rays for both players have turned out negative, but they'll probably take some time off to recuperate. In other news, manager Jim Fregosi has named Frank Castillo the fifth starter. He will fill in for the injured Joey Hamilton.
