Sometime before 1869 David Foster (born 1843), a bricklayer from Pudsey near Halifax married Hannah Hick (born 1844), of Leeds. The young couple moved from Pudsey to 26 Huddersfield Road in Leeds (destroyed later in WW1). The Fosters had 12 children, the last born, Samuel Foster born August 12, 1882. Samuel turned 15and decided to lie about his age to join the Army. He signed up for the Yorkshire Regiment to fight in the Boer War. Upon his return to England his age was discovered and he was let go from the army. He didn't recieve a medal for his service in the Boer War. At this time one of his older brothers was running a tea plantation in India and hired Samuel to work for him. After 5 years of work on the plantation, Samuel returned to England. Once again he joined the military as a soldier in the West Yorkshire Regiment. After 5 more years of service Samuel left the army. He moved in with one of his sisters (probably Rhoda) in Leeds. He worked for her at her cafe- serving the "workingman's breakfast." This is where he met and eventually married Winnifred May Walker. The couple had 6 children. He was very popular with his children, but sadly, died young as a result of complications from a surgery he had to remove an abcess caused by a work accident. |
