A dramaturg assists the director, designers, and actors by conducting research to support a theatrical production. 

The research may include historical data, current events, languages, cultural phenomena, and production history for the play in question.

Another important feature of the dramaturg's task is to help the audience through program notes, lobby displays, playwright biographies, glossaries of important terms, and by offering post-performance discussions.
