Here is the basic formula I used to calculate the hold ratings: 1. Compute a first hold rating based upon steals allowed per innings pitched. If pitcher is equal to the league avg. he gets a 0 rating. If double the league avg. he gets a +6 rating, if 150% of league average he gets a +3 rating. etc. 2. Compute a second hold rating based upon the SB pct. compared to the league average SB pct. This formula includes pitcher pickoffs in the CS totals. If pitcher gives up 75%, and league average is 60%, then pitcher gets a +3 rating. etc. (Note that double steals are only counted once, and pickoffs are included, so 60% is about the league average) 3. Combine these two hold ratings, giving the first rating (sb/inn formula) twice the weight of the second hold rating. 4. Subtract the catcher's throwing rating, based upon how many steal attempts were made with each of the team's catchers. Notice how Dennis Martinez benefits from this relative to the other Baltimore pitchers! 5. Additional adjustments are made, especially for fringe players. This is only the basic formula. 6. All of the hold numbers above were computed by this formula. For fringe players it would be best to adjust the rating, if you know something about the player's hold ability. 7. I have no idea what strat's formula is. I just tried to use something that seemed reasonable. Carlton Fisk was given a very high +5 throwing rating in 1979. If you want to change Fisk from a +5 to a +3 throwing rating, then here are the revised pitcher's hold ratings for Boston: Burgmeier -5 Campbell -2 Drago -5 Eckersley +2 Finch -5 Hassler +2 Rainey -4 Remmerswaal 0 Renko +1 Ripley -1 Stanley -2 Torrez +1 Tudor +2 Wright +5 Sundberg was given a -4 throwing rating, but the stats for Texas aren't as dominating as I expected.
