1947: SAYONARA TO "HAROLD THE LIP" & THE YEAR OF THE BLACK PLAYER

1947 was memorable for a lot this year. Sure, the Yankees won the pennant and world championship, but off the field, Leo "The Lip" Durocher was charged with libel for using ghost writer Harold Parrott to charge Yankee owner Larry McPhail with luring Chuck Dressen away from a coaching spot and schmoozing with the underworld. He was then suspended for the season. But on the field came the first five negro players ever to wear a major league uniform. Jackie Robinson and Dan Bankhead (Dodgers), Larry Doby (Indians), and Hank Thompson and Willard Brown (Browns.) Only Doby and Robinson went on to the Hall Of Fame, but all 5 were important as they started what would become a majority in 1990's:minority athletes in major league baseball.

The Yankees won the American League by a full dozen over Detroit and the National League was taken by the Dodgers despite the firing after two wins of Clyde Sukeforth, and replaced by the first of only 6 men to since manage the Dodgers, Burt Shotton. The Yankees won the series in 7, and only one game saw the victors prevail by over 2 runs, making it even closer than the 4-3 margin would tell.

In the NL, Big Johnny Mize missed a triple crown only by hitting a "low" .302. Relative unknown Harry Walker won the batting title with .363 and shared the season between two employers, the Cardinals and Phillies. But in the AL, Ted Williams won his second Triple Crown with .343, 32 HR and 114 RBI. Bob Dillinger's 34 SB led the majors over NL steal king Jackie Robinson's 29.
