| Just as the United States Coast Guard performs SAR missions at sea and on waterways, the U.S. Air Force is tasked with SAR missions in regards to downed small aircraft, and may also be tasked to perform certain functions at major aircraft crash sites. Since 1974, Congress mandated that all aircraft be equipped with an ELT (Emergency Locator Transmitter), which transmits a radio frequency tone when the unit is subjected to a severe jolt, such as a crash. Sometimes, the ELT can go off after a particularly hard landing, unknown to the pilot. Regardless, the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) satellites pick up this signal, and a call is sent out to track down the transmitter and close the call out. The Civil Air Patrol, as the official Auxiliary of the United States Air Force, is called upon to undertake these missions, performing approximately 90%+ of all inland Search and Rescue mission within the United States, with yearly "saves" of around 90-100 people. |
