About the Author
My name is Gloria Alvarez and I am an undergraduate student attending the University of California, Irvine.  The hypertext project on obesity was developed for my upper-division writing course that focused on the hazards of the virtual world.  I was a victim of sedentary activity growing up, and even as I got older I found myself struggling with obesity and finding that doctors were not providing me with the help or information I needed.  I took more interest in the subject because I witnessed my 8 year old cousin become addicted to television. He would get home, watch television, eat fast food or junk food, go back to watching television, and then go to sleep.  His sedentary cycle went on each day.  My family did not know that the habit he was developing could be hazardous to his health, and my family knew he was overweight, but never imagined he could be categorized as obese.  I had encountered the same problem.  I was never told, YOU ARE OBESE, because doctors were either not well educated on the subject or felt that my weight would eventually be shed because I was still young.  Childhood obesity is a serious problem and more and more children are developing health problems that years ago only adults would have, such as Type II Diabetes.  We must take care of our children and ensure that they have a healthy life.  A healthy life begins by turning off the television.
