Wrath of Killenstein - Self Titled
Inner Sanctum, 2000
Gloon:
Wrath of Killenstein play a brand of goth tinged synth-driven metal with crunching guitars that sounds like an unholy marriage between White Zombie and Godkiller. WOK are very good at what they do, their music is full of huge catchy riffs and horror inspired keyboards (reminiscent of Notre Dame) that creates a kind of creepy atmosphere throughout the course of the album. Though simplistic in style WOK never become tedious or strung out, most songs hover between the three and four minute mark and contain enough variation in structure and style to keep the listener engaged and attentive. Vocally Killenstein (main vocalist and song writer) switches between various vocal styles, incorporating black metal rasps, deep narratives and more cleaner singing into the mix seamlessly. Presentation and production wise I found myself impressed, the art work and concept fit the music perfectly and the production helps bring out the guitars and drums without overpowering the subtle synths. Overall I found WOK a pleasant surprise and hope to see more of them in the future. My only gripe is the length of the album only six songs (an intro, outro and musical help make up the nine tracks) at 30 minutes seems a bit of a shame, still worth tracking down and checking out.
