Suffocation Human Waste
Relapse, 1991
Gloon:
Suffocations first ground breaking release that helped lead to the creation of the New York style blueprint and laid solid foundations for the band to further explore the insane time changes and tempo switches which were later to become their trademark. Essentially Human Waste is 6 tracks of brutal early nineties Death Metal merged with early experimentation in jazz breaks and weird structuring. It also marked the emergence of the Suffocation image with superbly sick artwork and lyrical imagery to beautifully complement the insane metal being produced. While hardly earth shattering today Human Waste still sounds more inspired and viscous than most tedious Morbid Angel clones peddling their wares this decade. While most of the tracks here can be found on their historic debut, this is still nonetheless a satisfying though maybe a little nostalgic release to possess. All hail the kings of death!!!!!!!!

Suffocation  Effigy Of The Forgotten
Roadrunner , 1991
Lord Pale :
This is an early attempt at technical death metal . Similar to early Pestilence or Cannibal Corpse but with more variation , and instead of being blast beat driven , Suffocation sit more comfortably with heavy mid paced down tuned riffing and interesting drum timings . Adept early 90s soloing also rears its head throughout the disc popping out of the raw production and mumbled vocals to add interest. This is basically a really simplistic under produced version of the material the band is doing now. Lyrically intelligent but unfortunately the album gets very samey and lacks interesting developments and soon becomes an Effigy of Forgettable Material .

Suffocation Breeding the Spawn
Roadrunner, 1993
Gloon:
Suffocations second album almost became lost in the horde of imitators and crap that swamped the scene during Death Metals big bang of the early to mid nineties. Briefly abandoning their bass heavy sound for this release, Breeding the Spawn featured a less murky more polished production than its predecessors which may have isolated some of its fan base at the time. Becoming yet again more complex and daring with their merging of jazz inspired breakdowns and off tempo time changes, Suffocation once again released an album which paved the way for future acts such as Cryptopsy and Goreguts. Franks Mullens vocals sound clear and menacing and add a heightened anger to the mix while the lead work of Cerritos and Hobbs once again shines through the songwriting helping to break the chaos of disjointed bass and blistering blast beats. Once again while being groundbreaking the band also where adding new layers and textures to their sound improving, improvising becoming more of a force. Like Deaths ITP release this too was to be the calm before the storm as Breeding the Spawn was to lead into the bands greatest work to come. A great if underrated Death metal release.

Suffocation   Pierced From Within
Roadrunner, 1995
Tyrant:
Pierced From Within is both a brutally heavy and technically eclectic album. The Americans regularly change tempos and timings without warning but never lose focus on song structure. The bass sound is also heavy and prominent in the mix and frequently even more erratic than the six stringers. Frank Mullen has a charismatic deep deathly growl with plenty of personality and variation, definitely different from most death metal vocalists. The drumming mostly follows the tempo of the guitars, ( it slows down with kicks for slower sections and breaks out into blast beats when things get a little quicker ) but occasionally it just does its own thing and completely forgets what the guitarists are doing like the middle sections of Pierced From Within which adds to the erratic feel of the disc. The lyrics vary from your typical gore obsessed death metal ( with relevant social issues ) Thrones Of Blood, through to more intelligent subject matter like Torn Into Enthrallment. Pierced From Within is a genre classic that all fans of death metal should or likely do already own.

SECOND OPINION
Gloon :
A lesson in how technical death metal should be played. Heavy as fuck catchy as fuck brutal as fuck this is brilliant. If you are a death metal fan and havent heard this yet, then get on your knees and beg forgiveness and get your arse to your local record store NOW.

Suffocation   Souls To Deny
Relapse, 2004
Tyrant:
The return album all death metallers were waiting for has finally arrived. The first album of the newly reformed Suffocation Souls To Deny sees the band pick up where they left off on 1998s Despise The Sun. The material mostly reminds me of 1995s Pierced From Within but in a more clinical controlled manner and lacking that albums spontaneous feel. Suffocation still know how to pen a technical tune however and the albums tempo displays a wide variety of tempos though mainly I would classify it as a mid paced chunky death metal opus. There are some familiar moments To Weep Once More always reminds me of my personal favourite Thrones Of Blood, as well as some new spins on their style like the eerie screaming intro to Souls To Deny. A very typical style Suffocation cover rounds off the album in good form and fans of their last few release should find this both easy to get into yet fresh. Overall a welcome return to form and recording for the kings of American death metal.
