Sacramentum  'The Coming Of Chaos'
Century Black , 1997
Lord Pale :
Swedish melodic deathmetallers Sacramentum join the ranks of the bands who are quite obviously influenced by Dissection . Very similar stylistically to both Dissection and Swordmaster , Sacramentum have the ability to write a truely brilliant song as opener Dreamdeath abundantly proves with its excellent riffs , hooks and melodies but the rest of the album sadly fails to acheive the same high standards . Other tracks 'As Obsidian' attempt some slower more technical approaches but come across as jumbled in their many layer timing changes . The opening riff of 'Awaken Chaos' is one of the best blackmetal riffs ever written but when put into a song sounds rather drab because although all the element by themselves are good they just don't gel to make the same quality song . Other tacks get closer to becoming more cohesive as songs that stay memorable but still don't get anywhere near that Dreamdeath moment . This remains the problem for the rest of the album , tons of great rifs , great drum work , interesting singing and varied chorus' , that just don't come together to make a song that sticks in the memory  , which makes The Coming Of Chaos very frustrating listening indeed . An unfortunate waste of great talent , song writing skills should become a priority if these guys want to get anywhere .

Sacramentum  'Thy Black Destiny'
Century Media , 1999
Lord Pale :
Sacramentum's third album rages forth with a more refined agressive approach to their breed of Swedish melodic deathmetal . The songs are shorter and less artistic but very concise and well structured in place of this . This new direct attack sees the band's pace increase a little at the sufferance of their technicality but it makes for a more enjoyable listening experience across the album as a whole . The guitars offer a more low end bite in sections and the albums feel as a whole is more cohesive and dark , the same can be said for the vocals which offer more variety on this release . Sacramentum seem to have overcame the deficencies of 1997's 'The Coming Of Chaos' although I still feel a little sense of loss thatthey didn't further explore the realms they were playing in and come up with a few more classics like 'Dreamdeath' , but that time it seems has past for the band . The melodic core and slow downs of their music are still all here just in a different form than previously as Sacramentum reach out from their roots and try to forge their own sound , done rather successfully with this release . Thy Black Destiny is a step in the right direction with catchier songs and more wider reaching material the band should manage to increase their listener base substantially with this release Favourite Tracks - Spiritual Winter , Shun The Light , Overlord
