| Misery 'Curses' Venomous, 2000 Gloon: Misery are an old school death metal band hailing from Oz and on Curses, their third album, show great promise in bridging the gap between new and old. Misery borrow alot from early Morbid Angel with the feel and tempo of the album reminiscent of 'Blessed are the Sick', the slow grind of 'Immortal' will have many an Angel fan shouting praises from the pit. Slayer can also be cited as an influence with the riffing of 'Blood for Blood' sounding pleasing familar. The vocals are more a rasp and growl than the traditional gutural grunt of many bands which takes a little getting used to. The subject matter is hardly subtle in its anti-christian ravings taking a heavy dose from the Deicide side of things. Overall the album is a combination of all the things, and bands, we have come to love over the years. With a slick production and awesome presentation this is a very solid package if a little un-unique. Recommended to all fans who wish to relive the early days of Morbid Angel and Death Metal in general. Favourite Tracks - Sweet Oblivion, Swine, Zealot Rating - 7.5/10 |
