Midgard describe themselves as melodic death metal, however don�t go thinking �not another In Flames clone� just yet as Midgard have more in common with fellow compatriots Shadows Fall than any band associated with the Gothenburg scene. Ultimately Midgard play mid paced heavy thrash with more traditional metal solos and breaks which uncannily sound like the mighty Maiden. �Within the Darkness� boasts a variety of vocal styles and delivery helping to flesh out the songs and create unique and different flows throughout the album. Midgard create some damn fine tunes with strong at times catchy riffing and a knack for the immediately grabbing chorus, in particular �Sky Falls Down�, which brings to mind Swansong era Carcass. However sometimes the change in stye for the solos and breaks can be distracting and sometimes sound out of place. �Within the Darkness� is a more than competent debut EP with plenty of variation and good song writing to keep one more than happy after the first couple of spins. A strong first up effort and quite a surprise coming from American shores more than for their brutality than subtlety.
