| The Full Metal Mayhem team caught up with Eric Peterson guitarist with the almighty Testament and lead man in the all American blackmetal band Dragonlord. See what Eric had to say on singing for the first time, Nu metal and the hazards metal lifestyle. Firstly congratulations on a top album, most impressive were your debut on vocals. Was there any apprehension before recording? [Eric] No, there was no apprehension before recording. Besides not knowing what it would sound like yet, only the dream, there was the vision and confidence of the ideas. For a man that has been so ingrained in the American thrash ethos of the last few decades, what inspired you to enter the realms of black metal with your new band Dragonlord? [Eric] I think it was only a matter of time before I sought out some darker more atmospheric type metal. Being a fan of the darker arts, I was intrigued by the idea of a new wave of blackend thrash metal. Dragonlord possesses hints of bands such as Covenant and Old Man's Child, are you a fan of the European scene or is this just coincidental? [Eric] I would say both. |

The first thing that struck me about Dragonlord is the riffs, it seems you have taken the patent American thrash sound and seamlessly blended it within the black metal genre. Did this come naturally or was it something you aimed for from the beginning? [Eric] It is something that came naturally definately, the dream was there, and it was/is exciting watching it unfold! Testament's new release 'First Strike, Still Deadly' sees the band re-recording classics from their first two albums. I thought it was a great concept and did justice to the older material, who was the brainchild behind the idea and what inspired it? [Eric] Testaments fans were the ones who sparked the idea! And Chuck and I sought it out. |
On the American sound, what are your opinions of the so-called 'Nu Metal' revolution and does it have a place in the current metal community? [Eric] Dunno?, not in mine! ha! On a more personal note, what are your thoughts on the seeming plague of cruel sickness, which has seen many greats of the scene such as Chuck Billy, James Murphy and Chuck Schinduler battling for their lives? Does the metal lifestyle ultimately take more than it gives? [Eric] Yes it does, and all you can do is, do the best in your time and make it count! And be there for your friends! Finally what is next on the cards for Eric Peterson? Testament, Dragonlord and otherwise? [Eric] Well right now I am doing some local shows with DRAGONLORD and also writing new TESTAMENT material for a next year release. And the Dragon whips its tail!! ciao! Eric Peterson |
