Red Rover project

In the spring of 1998 we were in a project developed by Steven Dworetzky of King Middle School with LASI to make a model of the Mars PathfinderMarsSojourner.

Rover

Julian Cuevas

HI! My name is Julian Cuevas from El Sereno Middle School. I would like to tell you how my class and I did the rover project.

First, we got two 4 X 8 plywood boards and hammered them together. Then, we separated into 4 groups. We got crumbled up newspaper. We stapled it on the board with chicken wire. Sometimes we would get cut with the chicken wire. So, we got some wire cutters and cut the sharp parts off.

After that, we got newspaper and dipped it into starch and put it on the boards. We waited for one day. We found that the paper didn't stick. So, we got pancake mix and ripped off the paper that was already there. We dipped it in the pancake mix and put it on the boards. We waited for another day and saw that it worked. Then we poured sand over it. We started to find rocks and then put them on our landscape.

We started on the rover. In the beginning. we had trouble with the tires, because the right would go smoothly, but the left side moved more slowly. It took us three days to fix it. We got the rest of the Legos and built the frame big enough to fit the engines. Then, we tried it out started to send messages.

Erick Nava

Hi! My name is Erick Nava, one of the ex-students of Mr. Loew's class that participated in the "Red Rover Project."

O.K., so here's the deal, every class that participated had to build a landscape and a rover.

We sent our rover to another school, and they send theirs. We sent commands for them to move our rover around while taking pictures. The same went for us. We printed out the pictures. We tried to make the puzzle of connecting the pictures to figure out how to build a mini landscape of the other class's landscape.

We visited the other school to see if our mini landscape had anything in common with theirs.

It's a pretty fun project if you're interested in space studies. It's also a great chance to get to know your schoolmates better. You will have a lot of fun building a landscape, making a rover (out of Legos), and sending messages.

These schools participated in the 1998 Red Rover project.
