In
the United States, volleyball is highly popular in the West Coast because
of its suitable climate. The core of the national team seem to have come
from the state of California or have played from institutions such as
the University of California campuses at Long Beach, Los Angeles, Santa
Barbara, Pepperdine University, Stanford University and the University
of Southern California, all of which are in the Top 20 of either the men's
or women's NCAA Division I. |

Albert Hannemann once said in an interview that he learned about self promotion and public relations when he was still playing for the University of Hawai'i. He also said that there weren't any professional sports in Hawai'i, so the people really love their college teams. This is true since there have been record setting-crowds everytime their men's and women's college team would play. They have also given their players celebrity status especially the Rainbow Wahine, the fans fill the Stan Sheriff Center just to watch their favorite team. Where can you find a place where volleyball is the No. 1 sport? Only in Hawai'i! Volleyball nets are necessities in any Island park on the weekend, almost everyone in Hawai'i knows how to play volleyball. The ideal weather allows year-round practice for everyone. Hawai'i has also been the source of a lot of professional talents for both indoor and beach volleyball. It goes far beyond the walls of just one school, the University of Hawai'i in Manoa, schools like BYU-Hawai'i, UH in Hilo and Hawai'i Pacific University have also created a niche for themselves. These teams have been performing very well in their own divisions. |
