Japan has a rich history in volleyball. Their knowledge in the sport and how they revolutionized it gave tremendous impact on what volleyball is nowadays. Their contribution to the sport is highly recognized. Before, the Japanese were awed by anyone who played volleyball. Japan's first gold medal in women's volleyball in the Olympics was the reason for volleyball hysteria and made volleyball as the top sports for women because of their gold medal win. The players actually lived, slept and ate volleyball. The Japanese players would get up as early as 2:00 am and would start their training. Their lack of height was a disadvantage but that never stopped them from performing precise attacks and defending extraordinarily.

The Japanese adopted the sport of volleyball after World War II and chose to add this sport at the 1964 Olympics.

Japan also has a professional league, the V-League. National Team players and foreign players are the major attractions in the league. The Japanese fans are also a sight to see, they are very knowledgeable and one of the nicest crowds to play in front of.

Japan also hosts the biggest tournaments in volleyball since they have the best facilities and boasts a very competent organizing committee. The World Cup is the biggest tournament for volleyball in Japan, it happens every four years only and participated by twelve (12) teams each for the Men's and Women's Tournament. The Olympic Qualification is also held in Japan.

The Japanese are known for their technology. With their knowledge in the sport and their technology, they were able to create major volleyball brands such as Mizuno, Asics, Mikasa. They are major Japanese companies who specializes in volleyball apparel and equipment. These companies are the major role players in Volleyball today.
