For a country where football is the No. 1 sport, Brazil has managed to have a strong tradition in volleyball, with teams being world champions in indoor and beach volleyball. The strength of Brazilian volleyball was built around the culture associated with people playing beach volleyball all day at the famous beaches such as those in Rio de Janeiro. And since Brazilian men are more into football, the women are most likely to take indoor volleyball as their sport. A study on Volleyball television viewing in Brazil indicates that 23.9% of Brazillians between the ages of 12 and 64 have watched a volleyball match on television, a statistic relatively high compared to television viewing of other sports aside from football. The viewing levels are significantly higher among volleyball players themselves, meaning, those who played volleyball themselves are more likely to watch the sport on television. With the Superliga and the good grassroots program of Brazil, the talent continues to grow. Even in the backyard of their homes, the Brazilians play volleyball recreationally. A very good sign that more and more Brazilians are being aware of how to play the sport. |
