Greek Art

Greek Art is mainly in four formsarchitecture,sculpture,paintings,and painted poetry.People from different cultures produce very different art, and even within one culture the way art is produced changes over time`.

Architecture includes houses,religious buildings like temples and tombs,and public building like a city walls,theaters stadia and stoas.Another way to say it is Architecture is the art of bildings.Sometimes people build small buildings like sheds or their own houses. Other times people build very large buildings. These are sometimes temples or churches for the gods, or tombs for important kings or heroes, or palaces for kings and queens, or public buildings like theaters or sports stadiums. The 1st buildings that were built in Greece, in the New Stone Age, are small houses or huts, and wooden walls around them for protection. Later there are bigger houses, and stone walls around the villages.Thats what Architecture is mosly about.

Sculpture includes small figurine and life-size statues,but also relief sculptures which were on the sides of bildings,and also tombstones.Sculpture is mostly made of limestone and marble.Much of greek sculptures are gone you might think that it last along time because it's made out of limestone and marble.But limestone nad marble can burn and melt and turn into lime just by adding water which then turns into cement.Also the first people to make cement were the greeks.Sculpture has 7 main periods.We are never sure which period each sculpture belongs to.Also greek statues or sculptures were not valued in The Greek Ages.

Painting includes our ordinary suppilies and pictures of what ever we like.Lots of paintings we have are from Bronze Age.Lots of greek paintings have dissapered.It is strange that lots of lod paintings are still here and all the receent ones are not here.These reason some of them are not here is because they were buried in eartquakes and volcanoes.The earliest real paintings we have from the Greek world are from the Minoan culture on the island of Crete.Lots of paintings were made to decorate lots of god's or Goddesses walls.


Painted Pottery. includes pictures that are painted in pots. We have very little Greek painting from the Classical period; most of what we have is from the Bronze Age. The paintings were painted on walls, as decoration for rooms, like murals or wallpaper. On the other hand, we have a good deal of painted pottery from all periods of Greek history (down to the Hellenistic).Greeks did not only make pottery for decoration but they also used it to drink wine at feasts from the pottery.The Greeks made pottery for as great a variety of purposes as any ancient or modern people.
