GREEK SCHOOLS
All three schools have computers. Two of these schools (the 2nd Primary school of Rethymno, and the 2/teacher school of Embrosneros) use them for administrative, as well as teaching-learning purposes. The third school, the 6th Primary of Rethymno, has to the moment only one computer in the Head's office for administrative purposes. It plans however to install a computer laboratory that will be fully functional at the start of the following school year.
All three schools have developed innovative teaching-learning practices. However, the context, as well as the content of the innovations differ from school to school. The 2nd Primary School is currently participating in a number of innovative projects which involve schools from all over Greece. For example, the school participates in the "Melina", and "Comenious" programmes, is part of a national network of schools organised by the Ministry of Culture and is cooperating with EDIAMME (Laboratory for Intercultural and Immigrant studies, University of Crete). The 6 th Primary School of Rethymnon and the Primary School of Embrosneros village have developed innovations which, so far, are only limited within the context of these schools.
The 2nd Primary School of Rethymnon is an urban school located in the centre of Rethymnon town. The pupils come mostly from lower and middle class backgrounds, with a high proportion of parents employees of the University of Crete. The social background of the people could be said that is originating from the primary sector while there are quite a lot of people that find occupation in the third sector both private and public. Three pupils have Albanian and two Georgian (formerly USSR) origin. The number of the foreign pupils in the urban schools indicates that their families have chosen to live permanently in the town whereas their occupation is quite often in the villages. The head teacher is Michael Kadis, and there are 26 teaching staff.
The 6th Primary School of Rethymnon is also an urban school located in the centre of Rethymnon town, whose pupils have a similar social background to those at the 2nd Primary School. Twelve pupils have Albanian, 1 Bulgarian and 2 Ukraine origin. The head teacher is Markos Droudakis, and there are 24 teaching staff. Of these, 21 are class teachers, one is a foreign language teacher; one an athletics teacher; and one a music teacher. The total number of pupils is 350, and the total number of classes is 18, three per grade.
