zeus
God of the gods and of the sky, pictured with a thunderbolt or lightning in his hand, Zeus was the most powerful god. He had overturned his father Cronus and seized power, and everything was ultimately in his hands. Zeus was a weather god, as well as the protector of the law, the state, the society, the city, the family and strangers.
ares
The aggressive and brutal god of War, son of Zeus and Hera. His mistress and/or wife was Aphrodite and his followers were Deimos, Phobos (fear) and Eris.Ares was the god of bloodbath, as opposed to the goddess of war Athena, who was the strategical and wise of the two. The two deities of war were bitter enemies, which can be seen in the Iliad, where the two fight each other.Ares was a deity of Thebes, but is thought to have been worshipped first and foremost in Thrace. He also gave the name to the Athenian court Areopagus.Among Ares many children were the Amazons, the robber Kyknos and king Diomedes of Thrace.In Roman mythology he was called Mars.
apollo
Patron god of the Arts, the gift of prophecy and also connected with light (which in Greek also can be translated illumination). He was born on the island Delos by Leto, a Titan's daughter, and Zeus. The island was to be the most sacred of islands, and ruins of many temples can still be seen there. His sister was Artemis, the goddess of hunting and protecter of young women.
hades
The dark god of the dead, who ruled in the underworld, which also had the same name. His parents were Cronus and Rhea, and Zeus and Poseidon were his brothers. His queen was Persephone, who stayed with him six months of the year, thus causing the season on Earth to change to winter. Hades was cold and without mercy, but was not considered evil. His hat made its wearer invisible, and Persus went to kill the Gorgons he used it.
hera
Zeus' sister and wife, daughter of Cronus and Rhea. Hera was the queen of heaven and the gods and goddess of women and marriage. She was generally described as an avenging goddess, punishing those that had displeased her severely. Her husband Zeus was constantly unfaithful to her, and she had a lot of persecuting to do because of this and the fact that she was very jealous. Amongst her victims were Heracles, Echo, the Trojans because Paris had chosen Aphrodite as the most beautiful over her, Io, Leda and Leto.
oceanus
One of the twelve Titans and god of the river that surrounded Earth: the Ocean. His parents were Uranus and Gaea, and his wife Tethys, with whom he had the Oceanids and the stream gods. He was the grandfather of Prometheus through his daughter Clymene. Oceanus is the original water from which all rivers and streams come from.
