Greeks are not big beer drinkers, consuming just 39 litres a year per person, as opposed to the EU average of 80 litres a year per head. But while beer consumption in other European countries has been dipping slightly in recent years, the Greek market grew by an average of 3% per year between 1996-2001. Beer consumption rose from 384 million litres in 1996 to 438 million litres in 2001. It is a market with prospects says the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research, which published a study in December on the Greek According to researchers, there is potential for growth in imports, despite the fact that domestic consumers are reluctant to try them. In the period covered by the study, 160 imported beers accounted for over 5% of total sales. Most Greek breweries also import beers. Mythos, for instance, brings in Australian Foster�s , Danish Carlsberg and Irish Guinness and Kilkenny. The Hellenic Brewery of Atalanti imports Franziskaner , Leffe, Hoegaarden and Boddington�s ale.
