Greek Houses
The greek revival dominated american archriculture during the period 1818-1850.It was the first truly national style in the united states, found in all regions of the country. The popularity ofthe style was due to strong association with classical tradition and democracy. The greekrevival was veryadaptable, and permited all levels of building ,from high to low.In the mid-19th century, many prosperous Americans believed that ancient Greece represented the spirit of democracy. Interest in British styles had waned during the bitter War of 1812. Also, many Americans sympathized with Greece's own struggles for independence in the 1820's.During the second half of the 19th century, Gothic Revival and Italianate styles captured the American imagination. Grecian ideas faded from populari. The ancient Greeks were very proud of their city-state!. However, front-gable design -- a trademark of the Greek Revival style -- continued to influence the shape of American houses well into the 20th century.Greek houses, in the 6th and 5th century BCE, were made up of two or three rooms, built around an open air courtyard, built of stone, wood, or clay bricks.

Larger homes might also have a kitchen, a room for bathing, a men's dining room, and perhaps a woman's sitting area.Although the Greek women were allowed to leave their homes for only short periods of time, they could enjoy the open air, in the privacy of their courtyard.Greek housing is very important to the greek's.Their houses were very important to the greeks. In such households relations between men and women, traditionally perceived as dominating the domestic environment, should be placed within the wider context of domestic activity. Although gender was an important cultural factor which helped to shape the organisation of the house, this was balanced against other influences, notably the relationship between household members and outsiders. At the same time the role of the household in relation to the wider social structures of the polis, or city state, changed rapidly through time, with the house itself coming to represent an important symbol of personal prestige. The greek houses were very important. They had very hard lives. They were hard working people.
