As I mentioned earlier, Minoan culture remains somewhat of a mystery to us. We do know that their history was complex, with several abrupt shifts in artistic style. Their architecture was impressive in layout, but not overly ornate. Their palaces had low ceilings and small rooms with playful and decorative wall paintings. The best-preserved Minoan palace is located in Knossos on the island of Crete. It is a huge, maze-like structure that was eventually occupied by the Mycenaeans around 1450 BCE (If you remember your Greek mythology, King Minos' palace at Knossos was the legendary maze in which the Minotaur, the bull-headed monster, roamed looking for unlucky wanderers.
