Greece Famous Wines
The Karipidis began their wine ventureas a hobby in 1985.Their decidely comopolitan wines and upmarket image hardly hint so unambitious a beginning. Before the love of winemaking over their professional lives in Pantelis grew cotton and and a clothing factory,a good combination and likely pursiut in Vounena is located in the midst of Greece's famous plain of Thessaly. The first vintage pruduced in their backyards"under the most primitive conditions."They have truly come a long way. They have now 20 hectaresof vineyards under cultivation, all farmed organically. The brothers look beyond Greece for vareties from the beginning, perhaps because their, region, lacking both an appellation and much continuity in wine making, offers no definite prescription for varietal composition. The karipidis wines the region'srich soiland warm microclimate. The combination of little rainfall and sunny growing season accentuate their fruits, the climate seems not to place harsh limits on the development of sructer. The mid-Agust harvest bears witness to the early cycle typical of French cultivars on Greek soil, but the consistency of weather in the reagion, and the control the brothers have over moister during the season,is of obvious value to the integrity of the grapes.
