Morning

The dreaded staff party why the hell they felt the need to put each and every member of staff through the turmoil of bonding over too many drinks and a crowded dance floor was beyond him. And yet they persisted, year after year after year.
Jack rubbed his head, another hangover to welcome him into Saturday morning. He stumbled into the kitchen, dug out some aspirin from a draw, swallowed both and returned to his bed where he stayed until 4 in the afternoon.

Evening

Gee Jack why is it you go home at 2 in the morning after dragging me round every bar in the city and still manage to turn up tonight looking like someone from a magazine?
Well Lennie, you either have it or you dont, what more can I say?
Lennie slapped him on the back and followed him into the already heaving building. Ok so lets locate an empty table and get the drinks in while theyre free.
Deal, you get the drinks, Ill find a table. Jack squeezed past the crowds of people until he found a pretty empty table. Must be the better area of the club he thought, no drunken vandals attempting to sing and dance here. Smart tables, even candles in the centre, they must have really splashed out. He took his coat off and sat down, repeatedly turning a place mate over as he waited for his drink to arrive.
A hand rested on his shoulder. Hello stranger.
He spun round. Nora, hi.
Having a good time?
Not sure yet, only just got here. You?
She nodded as she sipped her wine. Free bar  - what more could you want?
Perhaps a civilised meal. Came the voice from behind Nora.
Jack, this is Richard, you finally get to meet.
Richard held out his hand. The elusive McCoy, heard lots about you. Damn good lawyer according to Nora.
Jack shook his hand. Flattered, especially if it came from her.
Dont let it go to your head. Nora smiled.

Late Evening

Jack watched the liquid swirling in the bottom of his glass, rich and silky, delicate and smooth on the way down. He swallowed the remainder of his drink and closed his eyes as the night air hit his face.
Jack, youre not having a good time.
Do you follow me everywhere? He smiled closing the window.
You seem distracted at the moment, permanently distracted in fact. Its not like you, usually a party like this would be great for you. She leant on the ledge next to him. Lots of pretty young girls to pursue.
I dont want them. He looked sideways at her, something in his eyes or his voice Nora wasnt sure but she reached out and ran her fingers down his cheek. He shuddered for a moment and closed his eyes, oddly frightened by the sensation.
You shouldnt worry so much, things will always work out in the end. She leaned forward and kissed his forehead. Come dance with me. She grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
Im not much of a dancer.
Me neither but Im more sober than most of those out there at the moment so we cant look to silly. Besides you cant not dance to songs like this. Classics. And Richard refuses to dance with me.
No Beatles though.
Oh Jack, come on. She tugged at his hand.
There was never any dancing at Helens parties.
That was part of the problem. She pulled him away from his melancholy window seat and he happily escorted her onto the dance floor.
