                                                                   A Jack/Nora story by Rhonda*

I want love, but it's impossible  A man like me, so irresponsible  A man like me is dead in places  Other men feel liberated  I can't love, shot full of holes  Don't feel nothing, I just feel cold  Don't feel nothing, just old scars  Toughening up around my heart But I want love, just a different kind I want love, won't break me down  Won't brick me up, won't fence me in  I want a love, that don't mean a thing  That's the love I want, I want love. I want love on my own terms  After everything I've ever learned  Me, I carry too much baggage  Oh man I've seen so much traffic But I want love, just a different kind I want love, won't break me down  Won't brick me up, won't fence me in  I want a love, that don't mean a thing  That's the love I want, I want love So bring it on, I've been bruised  Don't give me love that's clean and smooth, I'm ready for the rougher stuff  No sweet romance, I've had enough

Part Three A First for Everything

Friday 18th January - evening

Nora smoothed down her top and once again looked in the mirror; this was the third outfit shed tried on now, what were you supposed to wear on a date to the movies anyway? But this was it; she was adamant she wasnt going to change again. She looked okay, in fact she thought she looked pretty good for a woman of her age, she smiled to herself, tonight was certainly going to be interesting. She wasnt exactly sure why shed agreed to this anyway, she tried to keep telling herself that it was a simple evening out with a friend, but the way Jack had looked at her told her a different story. She was excited, although she didnt want to be, shed heard all the office gossip about him, how many women hed had, how good a lover he was supposed to be. Shed even been invited to join in the jokes a few times, but funnily enough she never told them that she had once dated him and hed cheated on her. Suppose she didnt want to join the list of past dates, so what was she doing here now? That was an answer she couldnt logically explain. She took one last look in the mirror before switching the lights off and closing the bedroom door. The intercom buzzed and she looked at her watch, Jack was on time, as shed expected him to be. She unlocked the door ready for him coming up, then switched off the main apartment lights just leaving the lamps on.
He knocked gently before entering. Hi.
Hello.
Are you ready?
Almost. She picked up a black scarf from the chair and wrapped it around her.
You look lovely.
She smiled. Thankyou.
Whats so funny?
Nothing it just feels funny, you giving me compliments.
Well I want to get the date off to a good start. Which reminds me, I have something for you. He went back to the hall and returned with a large box wrapped in red shiny paper and topped off with a gold bow. Here. He said handing it to her.
Isnt it a bit late for Christmas presents. She took the box and placed it on the coffee table, bending down to unwrap it. Jack leant against the wall watching her intently. You look like a child on Christmas morning.
I dont get many gifts. She pulled off the last of the paper and finally got to the box underneath. A chess board! She laughed. You bought me a chess board.
He knelt down next to her. Its a good one too, thought it was about time you learnt how to play.
And I suppose youre going to teach me right.
Might aswell.
Youre not one of those people who only reveals half of the rules so they always win are you?
He laughed. Damn youve worked me out. No I promise to play the game fairly. Thankyou, its lovely. Ill endeavor to be brilliant at it. She lent forward and kissed his cheek.
As you are at everything else right.
Of course.
He took her arm and helped her up. We better go, or well miss the trailers.
Best bit of the film right.
Right. And I havent forgotten Ive got some popcorn to buy.

They walked in silence, the wind had died down since that morning but it was still slightly chilly, a welcome after the stuffy theatre. They were walking closely together so their arms and hands occasionally brushed. Jack was dying to take hold of her hand and rub her frozen fingers warm, but he was nervous, hell was he nervous! Hed sat by her for over two hours, smelling her perfume, hearing her laugh, and watching her hand as it rested on the armrest next to him. In fact he was damned if he could remember what the film was even about. He began to hum a tune as they walked, lazily kicking at the snow melting on the sidewalk. He felt a tingle on the tip of his fingers and looked down to see Nora entwining her hand in his. She was humming along with him too. He stopped and looked at her. Whats wrong? She squeezed his hand.
This. He lifted their hands up. Ive been wanting to do this all night.
She smiled warmly. I know. She stood on her tiptoes and lent forward to kiss his cheek. Ive had a lovely evening, thank you.
Thats ok, do you fancy going for a drink?
Not really, I thought you were going to teach me how to play chess, if its not too late.
He smiled and pulled her closer to him, wrapping his arms around her waist. Suddenly all the nerves were gone and all he could think about doing was kissing that amazing mouth. He bent his head down and noticed how she smiled slightly before closing her eyes. He pressed his lips to hers gently at first, not wanting to go too far and put her off, but when he found she was more than willing he teased her mouth open and kissed her properly, how hed wanted to for the past few months.
He took a deep breath as he moved away from her, the night air refreshing and intoxicating, and watched as she slowly opened her eyes. That was even better than I remembered you always were one hell of a kisser.
Why thank you maam. He joked.
She placed her hand on his chest. But that doesnt mean Im going to sleep with you tonight.
He laughed. I didnt expect you would. He bent his head forward again to kiss her, but she held him back with her hand.
I think we should continue this back at my apartment, people will stare. Jack raised his head and looked around. I didnt know you were shy. He smiled.
There are somethings that should be done in private. Like play chess. She grabbed his hand again and almost pulled him down the street towards her apartment.
