                                                                         A Jack/Nora story by Rhonda*

"I want love, but it's impossible - A man like me, so irresponsible - A man like me is dead in places - Other men feel liberated. I can't love, shot full of holes - Don't feel nothing, I just feel cold - Don't feel nothing, just old scars - Toughening up around my heart. But I want love, just a different kind. I want love, won't break me down, won't brick me up, won't fence me in. I want a love, that don't mean a thing - That's the love I want, I want love. I want love on my own terms - After everything I've ever learned - Me, I carry too much baggage - Oh man I've seen so much traffic. But I want love, just a different kind. I want love, won't break me down, won't brick me up, won't fence me in. I want a love, that don't mean a thing. That's the love I want, I want love. So bring it on, I've been bruised - Don't give me love that's clean and smooth, I'm ready for the rougher stuff - No sweet romance, I've had enough."

Part Fifteen Girly Chats & Men Talk

"Cream or milk?"

"Neither."

"You take your coffee black now?"

"Mmm, just at the moment, cant seem to keep my eyes open."

"Youre overdoing it, you should slow down a little take some time for you."

"Says Anita wonder woman."

"I learned the hard way, besides my husband doesnt have a hundred ex-girlfriends and a five year old daughter crawling out of the woodwork."

"Jack isnt my husband."

"Close enough."

"Dont say it like that anyway, it makes him sound cheap. And dont look at me like that neither he made mistakes we all do."

"Some more than others."

"Oh drink your coffee and behave. Besides I dont mind Lolita, in fact I love her to bits."

"Ive noticed; giving up classy restaurants for McDonalds are we? And Sundays in bed for playtime in the park."

"You love being a mum."

"Occasionally, but I chose to be didnt have it thrust upon me."

"Neither did I, I made the decision to be involved, this could be the closest I get to being a mum. Its too late for the whole pregnancy thing."

"Stranger things have happened, older women than you have had fertility treatment."

"Can you really see me in pregnancy dresses with this huge bump?"

"Not really no or coming into a courtroom with a pram. At least you missed out on all the sleepless nights."

"Anita tell me, have I really missed out - I mean seriously."

"Honey youre a wonderful person; warm and caring, sometimes too much for your own good. But youve never struck me as the family type and neither has our dear Mr. McCoy thats why Im astounded you two have made this work."

"Hey thats not fair."

"Hear me out, Im telling you the truth. Youve spent your entire life working hard, fighting for the things you believe in and now its time for you. Youre in love for a start and I have a feeling thats here to stay. So what you didnt marry young and have babies does that make it any less real no! Youre enjoying what you have, and now if this little girl brings something else to your life then so be it. Dont dwell on what you didnt do."

"Its times like these I realise why youre my closest friend and the wisest person I know."

"Who needs a psychiatrist huh!"

* * * * *

"So how do you really feel about it?"

"About what?"

"Being a dad again."

"Shocked at first, terrified if you must know. But now Im feeling quite lucky. Lita is just amazing."

"And so much like you, which cant be good, youll have to discourage that."

"Very funny Lennie, want another coke?"

"Yeah why not, and get some nuts too."

***

"There you go."

"Thanks. So things are getting serious huh, lifes settling down for you. Children, commitments, Jack the family man."

"Funny thing is its not freaking me out. Im enjoying it."

"Youll be considering the dreaded M word again soon."

"You think thats a mistake?"

"Hey dont ask me, how many times have I messed that up? But youre the most settled Ive known you, if that means anything, so shes obviously doing something right."

"Yeah she is."

"The wonderful Nora; hows shes finding the job?"

"Im not sure, seems to enjoy it, she believes in justice for a start."

"Thats because shes a good genuine person, and there arent many of them around anymore."

"Sometimes I worry shes pushing herself too much though, especially with all the problems Ive brought recently."

"Hmm secret children, scandalous affairs."

"Ive learnt my lesson."

"No turning back eh."

"I wouldnt want to. Drink up and we can have a quick game, Im feeling lucky."
