Numbers
Anyone who works with any branch of science or technology needs to be able to talk about figures.

 

Look at how we say these in English

28% - twenty-eight per cent
10.3 - Ten point three
4/9 - four ninths
4(small 2) - four squared
8(small 4) - eight to the power of four
10mX12m - ten metres by twelve metres
1 2/3 - one and two thirds
9/13 - nine thirteenths or nine over thirteen
7(small 3) - seven cubed
32oc or F - thirty-two degrees centigrade/celsius or fahrenheit
1,623,457 - One million,six hundred and twenty-three thousand,four hundred and fifty-seven

 

Here are the basics of arithmetic
+ addition
- subtraction
x multiplication
division

6 x 7 = 42 six times seven equals forty two OR six times seven is forty two OR six sevens are forty two OR six multiplied by seven equals forty two

Have a look at some of these sentences
2% of the British population owned 90% of the countries wealth in 1992
Here you would say '' Two per cent of the British population owned ninety per cent of the countries wealth in nineteen ninety two.''
