Presenting Information to a Group

Ask yourself:

WHO am I talking to?

What is their level of knowledge; interest?

Why are they there?

Am I talking to the right people? If not, how do I make sure the right people are there?

WHY am I giving this presentation?

i.e. what do I want my audience to:

  1. Know
  2. Be able to do
  3. Do for me?

WHAT outcome do I want?

e.g.

  1. Immediate agreement and support
  2. Completion of some task
  3. Understanding of some key point
  4. Buying my product, services

WHERE will I give the presentation?

i.e.

  1. Do I have a choice?
  2. What environment is most appropriate?
  3. How can I structure the environment so that communication is most effective?

WHEN?

i.e.

  1. Is this the best time to talk to them?
  2. Are all the people I need to reach available?

HOW?

Finally, determine the best METHOD of communicating. Are you going to:

  1. Lecture
  2. Demonstrate
  3. Instruct
  4. Invite participation
  5. Give time for questions, interaction
  6. Participate in activities yourself
  7. What VISUAL AIDS (or other non-verbal means) are appropriate?
