JOB SEEKING SKILLS

Matching your skills to the job.

There are two parallel paths to this task.   The key to success is to stress demonstrated skills rather  than just list experience...

YOUR SKILLS INVENTORY

- What skills do you have and at what level?

- How and where did you acquire them?

- Where and how have you demonstrated them successfully?

- Which of these skills are relevant to the selection criteria?

- How would these skills blend in with or complement those of the people you would be working with?

- How would these skills be valuable for the organisation, the specific job?

WHAT THE JOB REQUIRES

-  What are the selection criteria?

-  Who are the people?  What are their skills, attributes?

- What kind of outfit is this?  What is the job description

Exercise:  Write a "template" application letter in which you include ALL of the skills you can identify.  (It is important to stress skills rather than just experience - you could have had all the experience in the world and learned NOTHING!!!)  In this letter you should say specifically where you have acquired these skills and how you have demonstrated them successfully.
