The Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of
  Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II presented to
  Mr. John Simpson, Vice President DMA Alberta Branch.

Mr. John Simpson was presented this medal by Rahim Jaffer, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Strathcona. The ceremony was conducted at the Strathcona Branch, RCL, on December 01, 2002.

  John was nominated in accordance with the guidelines as a "Canadian who has made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, their community and to Canada."  It marks over 15 years worth of extensive volunteer and community related activity cited in part with: the establishment of Emergency Response Department Cadet Corps and numerous other public programs; active participation as a member of the planning committee for the RCMP 125 March West and chair of the safety/medical team; founding member of the Alberta Mounted Historical Troop; the Defence Medical Association and more recently, the organization of humanitarian aid for Afghanistan through Op Apollo. 
  Those who know John will agree that he is the first to volunteer for whatever the job, with the knowledge of a job well done as his reward.  His past experience as a volunteer is extensive and includes many organizations and projects not listed here.

The Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative medals are struck from time to time to mark important anniversaries and other great occasions.  In keeping with this tradition, the Golden Jubilee Medal of Queen Elizabeth II commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of Her Majesty's reign as Queen of Canada.  The Medal will be awarded to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, their community or to Canada.

  In order to have a list of recipients that is representative of all regions of Canada, various organizations that include some 200 national and provincial organizations such as the Royal Canadian Legion, Scouts Canada, Girl Guides of Canada, Athletics Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Red Cross. The RCMP, the Canadian Forces, Members of Parliament, Senators, provincial and territorial governments, Lieutenant-Governors and Territorial Commissioners are invited to propose the names of candidates for the Medal  Approximately forty-six thousand medals will be distributed.

  The medal carries a contemporary effigy of The Queen on the obverse.  The reverse features the design of a stylized maple leaf with CANADA at the bottom and the years 1952 and 2002 on the left and right of the Royal Cypher and Crown.  The Medal is worn suspended from a broad royal blue ribbon, with red outer stripes, double white stripes with a red central stripe.

  The Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is part of the Canadian Honours System established in 1967. 
 


  Mr. John Simpson was nominated through his Member of Parliament, the Honourable Rahim Jaffer, M.P. Edmonton Strathcona.   This nomination was advanced by Captain (Rtd.) Gill Taylor, Pres. DMA Alberta Branch, and supported by a number of people of which not the least of was: Assistant Commissioner G. J. Greig, RCMP (Rtd), Member of the Alberta Award of Excellence Committee; and Colonel K. A. Munn, CD, QHP; with administrative coordination by Capt. Glen Larson (Rtd).

  Mr. Simpson is shown in the uniform of the City of Edmonton Emergency Medical Services.
