On Friday, January 9, 2004 I had a doctor appointment at 11:00 a.m. Robert and I expected Dr. Garza to say that my cervix had not changed and to keep walking. We were shocked when he told me that I was dialated 4 centimeters and to head to the hospital.
We arrived at Labor and Delivery at Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital at Noon. Robert left at 12:30 to pick the kids up at school so they could be there for Emma's arrival.
Dr. Garza came in at 12:50 to break my water and stated that "It won't be long now!" And he started to pitocin drip.
I started to panic, worried that Robert would not be back in time. He arrived at 2:30 p.m. The nurse had just checked my cervix because I was having quite a few contractions, but I was still at 4 cm's.
At 3:30 p.m., I told the nurse I really felt the need to push. She checked me and I was at 9 cm's!! She started getting the room ready and called for Dr. Garza.
After 3 or 4 pushes, at 3:53 p.m., Emma made her arrival. She was blue and not breating because her umbilical cord was wrapped tightly around her neck, luckily only once. She perked right up and started crying once the nurses started working on her. She scored a 7 and a 9 on her apgar tests.
We could not be happier! She is a wonderful baby and all of her brothers and sisters are head-over-heels in love with her. |
