Guilderland XC Shirt History

Invy Shirts Through the Years

Please be patient as we continue compiling these...thanks!

Our home invitational is steeped in tradition. One such tradition are our original invitational long sleeve shirts. Each year a new design is unveiled and sold to the participating schools. These shirts are still worn by many alumni of Guilderland and visiting schools. It's amazing where you may come across someone wearing one! Here we have archived a number of different shirts with notes on their designs. Enjoy!

INVITATIONAL SHIRTS*

*All shirts designed by Sandy Morley, unless otherwise noted.

SHIRT DESIGN

NOTES

1987: This was the first ever invitational shirt designed for the purpose of selling them at the invite. The design reflects Morley's long attraction to the art of cartooning.
1988: This shirt also reflects Morley's talent for cartooning. Note those who couldn't take the hills waving their "white flags" in surrender.
1989: "The Future's So Bright...I Gotta Wear Shades!" Here she began to explore designs outside of cartooning, yet if you look carefully in the sunglass lenses you notice cartoon runners.
1990: Morley got this from a billboard that she saw in Florida, during the summer taking a course from Disney. She actually sat on the median in the middle of a highway to sketch the idea. Originally was labeled "Shop Til You Drop".
1991: This design Morley got from one of the telephone books promoting "long distance" communication.
1992: This design was the first to incorporate triangles, a motif that you will notice repeated in future shirts (i.e.; 1994, 2000 & 2001).
1993: This design plays off the Saratoga race course theme of the "August Place to Be". Notice the horse scratching his head down in the corner of the calendar.
1994: This was the first invy shirt to feature Coach Drake's likeness on the sleeve (see below) in honor of his career at Guilderland.
1995: The tree/runner design is reminescent of the Tawasentha Cross-Country shirt that comemorated 25 years of summer races in the park.
1996: Designed with John Wagner's help, this was the first invy shirt in black! The design Morley and Wagner stole from a New Balance design they saw at the Boston Marathon Expo the year before. It became the logo for some of our "Keep The Wind At Your Back" shirts as well. The flames were not initially part of the design, however, the screen-printer had extra black long sleeves available that he was willing to give us at a discounted price. There was a limited amount of invy shirts that had flames on them--which went quickly. These sold very well! 1997: Plays heavily off the 1996 design except we tried it in white. Very patriotic with red, white and blue colors! 1998: Bold and bright on white 1999: Nice runner-in-circle design with colorful background. 2000: Very Guilderland-like in red & white. 2001: Back to black for a new millenium. To mark the occasion Morley used some spactacular colors. 2002: Designed by Sandy Morley & Bob Oates. This was the first invy shirt to feature Coach Morley's likeness (see below) on the sleeve in honor of her career at Guilderland. Notice this was the first shirt to omit the "international" due to the slight possibility we might not have any of our Canadian friends--but they came! 2003: This hot new design features Coaches Morley and Drake on the back (see below). This was the first year the shirt was designed by someone outside the coaching staff (unknown as of yet). 2004: This retro design is reminiscient of 1995--except with only one runner in the woods. The first invy shirt in gray! The quote says, "Somewhere in the world, somone is training when you are not. When you meet them they will win!" Bad weather stunted sales.

COACHES LIKENESS'

DESIGN

NOTES

Coach Drake: Designed by former HS art teacher Art Waugh, this design features him as we knew him best; running around a meet like a chicken with its head cut off, stopwatch in hand, whistling like crazy!
Coach Morley: Designed by the father of former runner Dan Radden (who is a cartoonist). This design was actually drawn for Dan's follies team.
Morley & Drake: Share the back in 2003.

MISCELLANEOS OTHERS

DESIGN

NOTES
Too old to recall... 100 Mile Shirt was an incentive for athletes to put in at least 100 miles over the summer.
Keep The Wind At Your Back 5k was a road race put on to benefit the Guilderland Cross-Country team. The race, which was run from 1995 to 1999, ran around the perimeter of Crossgates Mall. Designed by Sandy Morley, this shirt draws heavily from the Invy shirt design.
The famed award shirt distributed to the winning teams each year at the Guilderland Invy. This is a coveted shirt that has changed only slightly over the years. The design is modeled after the glass medals that are awarded to invididuals. Award watches also bear this design.
This is the back of the 1994 State Meet shirt awarded to the winning team. Since the team donated the shirts each year we got a HUGE "plug" by having our logo and name across the back. I always liked how it almost looked like we were the "Team Champions", especially since "Donated By" was so small!

If you have any additional shirts you'd like to add or see something that looks inaccurate, please contact us at [email protected]

Thanks to Sandy Morley, James DiCamillo and Dieter Drake for tracking down all these shirts!
